Charts and Steerpoints: How Detailed Do You Plan Your Flights?

For you hard-core simmers, how detailed do you lay out your flight paths, specifically the departure and arrival portions of your flights? Do you place your steerpoints (e.g. steers 2 and 3) according to the charts . . . .
or do you just accept the steerpoints the 2D UI places and you fly the chart to get to steer 2?

Well here’s the thing…. That is a normal SID for any aircraft flying out of Osan….airlift aircraft, VIP, tactical aircraft, etc.
During a conflict, it is possible there are additional non-published departure procedures for combat aircraft—possibly procedures for VMC and IFR conditions (or the fighters take off in radar trail). Since the procedure you posted is for going south and then west or east, it’s not one I’m going to use to go fight up north.
Fighters are going to want to climb and get underway to their targets or their role as efficiently as possible, adhering to any special routing (in the case of any local air space defense requirements), host nation requirements, other airspace concerns, etc.
Bottom line, I usually just blast off and turn the shortest direction to get on course. If it’s IMC, get above the weather if possible… but what I really care about is being on time.

@Crassus This chart is a SID (Standard Instrument Departure) chart.
No need to fly those pattern if you have none IFR conditions -
If were flight lead for this flight I would brief “Chart to MUSTG then direct Steer 2”
I do like to use the chart - even if modified - on every flight rather than just “turn and burn” but I am a bit odd like that ;0)

For Dep, i limit to make only a few steps of Chart, Because the chart often directs you to a south route (against the objective of the mission)
For App, i ALWAYS fly a FULL IAC Pattern!

Sure you can do that. But in a VFR combat enviroment that could cost you some time (and fuel).
The documentation is lack of VFR departure patterns and exit procedures (yet). Those will be developed in the future. -

The only official and legal way to fly SID/STAR is by us8ngTACAN needle en DME.

No… it’s not… There are charts with Waypoints in service today, they are call “RNAV”. That’s the case in some charts in BMS (Simplified, of course!)

I think he means in the F-16. It’s not RNAV-substitution certified. However, new blocks of F-16 now have NAV databases, so named waypoints can be pulled up (and yes, dobbering through the alphabet to type one in is kinda like how old cell phones used to require scrolling through the letters).

Just to make it official……
The F-16 is approved for RNAV 2 and BRNAV for enroute navigation IAW with advisory circular (AC) 90-108 change 1, Use of Suitable Area Navigation (RNAV) Systems on Conventional Routes and Procedures and international civil aviation organization (ICAO) Doc 7300, Convention on International Civil Aviation. RNAV waypoints, routes and NAVAIDs must be pulled from a valid and certified database, e.g., Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File, by name. Terminal area RNAV procedures, (RNAV approaches, missed approaches, arrivals and departures) are not authorized until such a time as the procedure in its entirety can be pulled by name from an approved database and auto sequenced during the procedure.)
