Tool Devs help! .exe detected as virus
-
Hi all.
I ported a small took (KBMZ) is made for BMS to a .exe file with visual studio, and it works fine. I uploaded it to my storegate repository for testing, but when i download to a new computer, windows defender sees it as a virus.I’ve been reading up on the option to add a certificate to it. It looks like I would need to buy and annual certificate and host the file at a trusted domain. Any advice to improve the situation without incurring cost would be welcome.
Cheers

@Fish44 If you package the .exe in a .zip or .rar then it will be less likely to be flagged and/or quarantined following a direct download.
If you (or if you instruct users to) right click on the .exe before executing it, you will see a “Unblock” checkbox added by Windows when it blocked the uncertified executable. You can check this box and click OK - and now when running the program, Windows Defender should be prepared to allow its execution.

@Fish44 You can upload the EXE here to see how/what is causing a false positive.

If it’s not that – if it’s just the browser download, setting the “untrusted” flag, and Windows Defender throwing up warnings about that… I don’t know anything better than what Semler said.
I believe all 3 major browsers set that flag… even when downloading over HTTPS.
