BMS no longer starts
-
When leaving BMS - Windows crashed and rebooted. After that attempts to run BMS have failed. I get the start screen and choose run , then the splash/logo screen appears for ~10 seconds and disappears. After that nothing. Restarted again - same thing.
I don’t have windows dump files configured or any prep setup to file a troubleshooting report.
Is there anything I can check or fix to get this running again.

@jcook Not sure about the Windows crash/reboot. First thing, verify audio is working ok? (ie. play a song or watch a youtube video or something)
I’ve had trouble with stock USB audio drivers not starting ok, upon reboot, with Windows 10 off and on over the past year.
If you run BMS with the
-mono
command line switch, you’ll see some debug output… you will see it say something about “SoundDriver” if it hangs/crashes during the splash screen, when it’s unable to find a working audio device path.Or maybe it’s something else. Look for recent logs in
\Falcon BMS 4.36\User\Logs
directory. -
I’ve posted some crash information to tech support. Never had to do that before so not sure when they might get to it. Have a feeling its going to be a reinstall situation. Is there a list that identify which files I need to copy over to a new install?
Stuff like my 4.36 TEs, logbook, USB device order list, and all the other stuff one doesn’t want to lose or re-enter.I’m at the base 4.36 version, so if I have to do a reinstall - it will be to version 4.36.3
Is it advised when reinstalling to uninstall the current version? I know different versions can coexist, however in this case the 4.36 ver may never be playable…
-
@jcook Don’t reinstall yet (although doing so recently got much easier, with the new single-file installer).
I don’t recognize that crash log, so not sure what’s going on. But the next thing I’d try, in terms of relative harmlessness, is to delete your
\Falcon BMS 4.36\User\Config\d3d11.dsp
file.Especially since you’re describing some weirdness about the window and splash screen position.
This file just stores prefs from the Setup/Graphics page. BMS will recreate the file, with safe default values (borderless-window mode).

@jcook said in BMS no longer starts:
…Have a feeling its going to be a reinstall situation…
I hope you don’t have to re-install, but if you have to…
If you have the space, rename your BMS folder, then make a new BMS folder, then ‘uninstall’ from the setup.exe file. This clears only the new folder. Then reinstall. You can then copy files across from your old install as you need them.
if you don’t have space to keep the old install, then at least backup these folders…
........\BMS436\User\Config .........\BMS436\Data\Campaign Any other theatre campaign folders.

@airtex2019 Thanks for the info. Your suggestion worked!
It did need to reset my resolution (it had dropped me down to 1024x768) and it had forgotten the button programming for my Cougar joystick . It remembered my Cougar throttle, which is connected via TUSBA - maybe that helped.
Anyway these were easy to fix and saved me having to reinstall.

@Fish44 Thanks Fish - good information for when I move to another system!

After taking a short practice flight I checked my logbook. 0.0 hours, that’s not right. It had me listed as “Viper / Joe Pilot”, my actual callsign is there in the dropdown list, but doesn’t seem selectable - it just stays as “Viper / Joe Pilot”.
How can I correct this?
Is my old logbook recoverable? -
Mine stopped working after a Windows update a few days ago. 4.36 and Alt. Launcher wouldn’t even open. I posted on Tech Support and hoping someone can help me out. Everything worked fine until after the update. Funny thing is 4.35 works just fine.
