OpenTrack NeuralNet

Is anyone using this? Can anyone recommend a good camera for this? What are your experiences using this vs. TrackIR or other forms of headtracking?
-
I use it with a PS3Eye camera and works well. Is not as precise as with delanclip, but is close enough. And has the advantage of not having to fiddle with headsets and cables.
Probably a better camera would work better, but I already have this one and works well for me.I find it works better from down-up than from up-down, meaning the camera lower than my face. And your face has to be well lit.
Also, being less precise forces you to tune it better in the config. So, if you have the patience to tweak opentrack (I’m still making changes here and there), I recommend it. -
@Ferde is it the kind of thing that works better, wearing something like delan-clip or a headset with white dots… or does it track facial features

At least with my camera facial is the “worst” of them and the one that need to edit the options the most. But is good enough.
If you want the best precision, go with the delan-cip.

If there is the need for a LED emitter, then I may as well stick to my TrackIR. I’m just having some position/tracking issues and wondering if NeuralNet is a good enough alternative? Or does it need a good camera? 1080p? 4K? 30fps? 60fps? etc. or does it still work spotty/jittery even with the best webcams available?
-
It doesn’t need any markers, it helps when your face is well lit.
Cam res is not important, 60fps cams paired with modern cpu can make tracking smoother.
Good thing NeuralNet tracker works great in daylight and doesn’t mind windows or sun reflections behind your back, contrary to any trackir-like solutions which can be easily confused by some extra light.
In the end if you have any 30fps webcam you may try it for yourself and decide if it’s worth to go that route. It needs some fiddling with tracker and filter settings (as any head tracker) but it’s doable to get decent results.
Now i’m using opentrack/neuralnet tracker +unmodded PS3 Eye (cheapest 60fps cam you can find) and I think it does the job well. -
@Xeno Thanks! I do have the Logitech C920 which is HD 30fps but it’s not set up on the flight rig. I will have to, ahem, “borrow” it for testing.
I do fly in a dark room, no lights turned on, but with a big monitor shining light on my face anyway due to flying, I wonder if that will be enough.

@Atlas
Small desktop/on the clip lamp next to your monitor should be enough to make a difference. Light from the display might be inconsistent depending on the scene shown. -
@Atlas I’m not fully answering your question, as I’ve not tried face tracking but I’d like to add my 0.02$
The Benefit of a ‘powered’ or ‘reflector’ (only in TIR) IR tracker, is it works pretty good in both normal (not direct sunlight) and dark conditions. I can’t imagine having to have a bright room during night flights in BMS, (i have black out blinds for that reason). Absolutely an immersion killer, apart from the practical flying challenges it presents.
I have both TIR and OpenTrack, with a custom battery powered iR emitter which works with both. I’m now using OpenTrack.
Issues to consider if deciding between them.
TIR: I get the annoying ‘shifting’ of the view during a pause. (only in BMS).OT : Can’t pan the pit with a mouse, even when the camera is off (solvable with a legacy version of OT, if you only use tracking for BMS).
-
No need for bright room, small spotlight is enough.
-
@Fish44 I do have TIR and had it for ages and as I mentioned earlier, if I’m going to use LEDs anyway, then might as well use TIR. I have a wireless LED setup from a guy that was doing them years ago and I use velcro to attach/remove from my headset.
@Xeno what sort of spotlight are you referring to?

Finally tried OpenTrack with NeuralNet this evening and while it can track my face fine, the translation on the screen isn’t smooth at all. Not very jittery, but just enough to have like micro-second pauses.
Does anyone have a profile I can try out? Thanks!
