AV8B Hover Controllability in 4.37
-
This thread is a repeat post of one I started in the General Discussion. I am repeating here because I believe that it is a confirmed bug. In 4.37, the Harrier seems to have no bleed pressure to the axis control nozzles. When flown referencing the DED INS display, one can see this clearly as you slow below 30 knots. Faster than that you have very weak control but still some. Slower and control degrades to nil, best observed in yaw. That DAT files between 4.36 and 4.37 are essentially identical but 4.37 does add an AI Max AOA in the “AOA and Sideslip Limits” section, line 24.
The best confirmation is to test the single AV8B+ in the WASP TE with zero loadout and 5000 lbs. 4.36 demonstrates very good controllability and responsiveness where 4.37 has none of either. At speeds above 80 or so, both versions seem close, if not identical. Moving the .dat files from 4.36 to 4.37 and adding the max AI AOA value of +25.000000 (to avoid a CTD) yields a model that is unchanged from the original 4.37.

@Smokin-hole - That’s not only good, but also very interesting info - great snooping!
As an aside, the Fuel Low indication in a RL Harrier comes on at 200 lbs remaining - and pilots consider themselves having used “ALL” of their fuel if the 200 lbs flashers come on just as the jet is being chocked.
So walking into the hover with 5000 lbs fuel remaining is a bit in RL excess, if that is what you are meaning.

In the game, clean and 2/3rds gas is light enough to lift to a hover. Which for testing purposes that’s all that matters. It’s axis control, not performance that separates 4.36 and 4.37.
Also, it looks like the mystery has been solved (per the other thread). Some code was deleted while working on another module.

@Smokin-hole - saw that…not surprised, happens to us at work all the time!

Just put
1 #hasNASAIn the afm files of av8 instead of 0
-
@Mav-jp Yep that seems to have fixed it. Thank you!

It is the “0 # Has NASA Model” line, correct - Make it read “1 # Has NASA Model”? Searched all AV-8B for #hasNASA with 0 results.
-
@Icer Yes that’s the line
-
Does this affect AI Harriers too? Should we all change that line?
-
AI harriers don’t use AFM model

Fix for U1

@MaxWaldorf
Thanks for the fix, (and @Mav-jp for solution)… already trahsed few planes trying to land on Wasp.Please, can you add followin lines to Av8b+.dat for default, future release.
Thanks
NoTefSound 1 BrakeAbsorptionFactor 2.0 NWSRateUp 10 NWSRateDown 10 avionicsJDAMAvionicsType 1 avionicsDLCursorAsWaypoint 1 avionicsActivateMFDBoot 2 avionicsRWRType 5 avionicsIFFTransponderSettings 63 avionicsIFFInterrogatorSettings 15
-
@white_fang Where are those settings coming from? based on what inputs?
-
Flys like a dream now. Thanks for the solution!
-
@white_fang Could you expand a bit on what those settings do to the AV-8B? Clearly the last two lines enable IFF but what do these do?:
avionicsRWRType 5 BrakeAbsorptionFactor 2.0 avionicsJDAMAvionicsType 1 avionicsDLCursorAsWaypoint 1

@MaxWaldorf
Those settings are from me flying and tweaking AV8b+ since BMS 4.32
(well, of course, not all, as few didn’t exist at the time).
But if you look closely , you’ll see that these are pretty common., for all aircraft, with few exceptions. - not affecting flight model anyhow
@Kavelenko- avionicsRWRType 5 - since av8 don’t have dedicated rwr this will display rwr on HUD, like F18, which av8+ really has (AN/ALR-67(V)3)
- BrakeAbsorptionFactor 2.0 - not crucial, but helps braking on Wasp, short
- avionicsJDAMAvionicsType 1 - enable simple ripple for jdam steerpoint - precision steerpoint
- avionicsDLCursorAsWaypoint 1 - enable send radar GM/GMT cursor position via idm/datalink steerpoint (MP obviously)
- NoTefSound 1 - get rids of constant “flap” sound when controlled by FLCS
- NWSRateUp 10 - helps with turning the plane on small space, wasp deck (nose wheel turning rate)
- NWSRateDown 10 - same as above, but opposite, centering the nws when pedal released
- avionicsActivateMFDBoot 2 - jsut as it is cute, immersion, no other impact - but looks more real - as mfd’s now take time to heat up, initialize
- avionicsIFFTransponderSettings 63 - this one is default
- avionicsIFFInterrogatorSettings 15 - this one you really need if want to use IFF interogator (deafult 0, no interrogator, huh?)
Cheers
btw, while at that, this one is more real then current, in reality AV8/8+ has 4/6 chaff flare dispensers - with whole bunch of flares (since Desert Storm) - so this is closer to truth (180 of chaff/flare combination)

@white_fang Thank you so much for explaining those functions in detail. That flap sound drives me nuts, not anymore! I’m definitely going to use some of these myself, cheers!

I’ve extracted the RWR using RTT and can still use that as well as the HUD version, it all aides with SA.
-
I will include a couple things for U1
-
@Kavelenko
Yes, I’m also RTT (android). But prefer only MFD’s on tablet… kinda pita switching between icp-rwr/mfd constantly… prefer Hotas approach… not releasing the “wheel” more then necessary.HUD RWR is ok, … missing ship only… but can enable TWP-UNKNOWN with force , keys press (ALT-num1)
ICP - I use still numeric keys… dunno, for me is faster, probably because I’m used to. - years of training - know what/where to press in pure dark
(while not really real, I’ve also preset ICP-dobber and ICP-UP/DOWN switches to COMMS switch (Cougar shifted) - so radio and steerpoint easy switch not releasing the stick at all)
