Solved New launcher won't start
-
@Fluke I’m as curious as you to know what happened. Hopefully not some ransomware or something very bad.
Maybe step 1… unless someone else has brighter ideas… what do you get if you do
Start / Run / cmd.exe
C:\> set user USERDOMAIN=DEVHOST USERDOMAIN_ROAMINGPROFILE=DEVHOST USERNAME=Airtex USERPROFILE=C:\Users\Airtex
-
@airtex2019 I get the same (but obviously with different names), so my user profile just doesn’t show up in explorer but is still present
-
@Fluke ok, next step – try this, but substitute your user name obvs
C:\> dir /a C:\Users\Airtex\AppData Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 421D-642A Directory of C:\Users\Airtex\AppData 11/21/2021 02:56 AM <DIR> . 11/21/2021 02:56 AM <DIR> .. 01/11/2023 10:35 PM <DIR> Local 02/20/2022 03:26 PM <DIR> LocalLow 01/10/2023 08:14 PM <DIR> Roaming 0 File(s) 0 bytes 5 Dir(s) 95,189,008,384 bytes free

@airtex2019 ok, so the user folder was hidden, that was an easy fix. Still not sure why AI won’t write a log ofcourse.
I’m getting to the point where I’m desperate enough to reinstall my system lol
-
@Fluke weird … so it starts now?
the thing that bothers me is, the ‘AppData’ subfolder under there is normally hidden, on Win10 … but not the top-level ‘Users’ directory, or ‘Users\YourName’ … or the Local, LocalLow, Roaming folders under there.
and the code still works… so not sure why a hidden top-level ‘Users’ dir would be any different than hidden mid-level ‘AppData’ dir. I’m afraid to try it and find out … lol
the Alt Launcher code is using entirely normal means to find and open that ‘Local’ directory… if that was failing, I’m really surprised much of anything was working on your box.
-
@airtex2019 I’m pretty darn confused now, but now that my user folder is not hidden anymore, the launcher starts as it’s supposed to. For the life of me I can’t figure out what I have been messing with, but heck… it runs again…
-
@Fluke glad I could help! I can’t imagine what caused that, and why it would cause such a failure (but not cause literally almost everything, including the Windows shell, to fail)
fingers crossed that was only problem, and easily resolved…
-
@airtex2019 indeed… if anything weird happens I’ll reinstall my OS and start from scratch. Thanks for the support!

@Fluke but srsly do a malware scan … I can imagine some cheesy, lazy ransomware saying “ha, we’ve deleted all your files! pay us bitcoin!” and really all they did was toggle the hidden-flag on C:\Users

@airtex2019 will do. Also, its a dedicated rig so it would be no problem to just format c :).
