Laser Maverick not going into OPER, but stays in STBY
-
Hi guys,
I’m probably doing something wrong, but reading through the Dash43, Training Mission and this forum I can’t figure out what.
I have an F-16 loaded with two AGM-65L (laser ones). I’ve powered them up and wait for several minutes. I have uncaged them, showing an S in the right WPN MFD.
It does not say OPER but STBY instead. There is no “Not timed out” message.
I trigger my laser with first detent. Now a block will appear but stays in the middle of the screen. Even when maneuvering, it stays exact in the middle. I’ve seen videos where this laser marker is moving on the screen.
Fortunately when I fire the maverick it will track and hit, but it feels there is a small bug for not going into OPER and a moving laser spot indicator.

I think ‘STBY’ is a button label… press that OSB and it powers down the mav.
(I have no idea which experience is closer to correct, but I confirm the pics in the -32 doc don’t match what’s on the MFD.)
For weapon status, look for the smaller ‘RDY’ indicator at the bottom-center of the MFD.
I do also confirm, the laser-spot did use to move around… maybe in 4.36? Perhaps in PRE mode, with the laser slaved to the TGP, it’s expected it will always be dead center… unless the gimbal is maxd out?
I’ve never tried laser-mavs in VIS or BORE submodes. I’m not sure I even understand how those modes would be useful or what they would do… maybe for JTAC / buddy-lasing?

@Bertuz - the current BMS LMAV implementation is pretty gooned…it’s missing scan modes, showing status, etc.
What should be happening is that if the seeker isn’t moving, it’s because it’s Caged - there is no “STBY” mode…the weapon is either Caged, UnCaged, Slaved, scanning, or locked.
Once the missile is selected and timed in, you’re on your way…
-
Yeah, i’m 100% sure i uncaged it. It showed an S on the right side, but the laser box was still fixed in the middle.
I waited over 3 minutes to calibrate, the “Not timed out” message was gone. I’ve seen multiple tutorial video’s of 4.36 in which it just works. It goes from STBY to OPER, the laser marker is moving accordingly.
But i tried it several times, it doesn’t seem to work for in 4.37.1. I’m using it in PRE mode in combination with the TGP. I fire the laser with first trigger detent and confirms to see a flashing L in the TGP. The laser is in combat mode.

I’ve recorded a small clip with the issue.

@Bertuz - “S” means (or should mean) Slaved. If you have a designation when you unCage, the seeker should point - Slave - to that designation regardless of if there is laser energy there or not. If there is no energy, it will Slave and simply continue to stare at that point. Then once it picks up energy it will Lock. If you want it to go into scan you have to clear that designation. At least that’s how the RL missile works…
One place where the model is gooned is this “STBY” indication…an LMAV doesn’t go into a “STBY” state. It’s either timed in or not, and either Caged or unCaged. The model is overthinking it - big time.

@airtex2019
Question for anyone. When I pickle off a MAV-L the only way I get a hit is I have to hold down the trigger-one to keep the laser firing. On the ICP/laser setup I have it set to CMBT and 40sec ST time. When we use LGB, the laser starts to fire at the set ST time. With these laser Mavs, the laser does not start and stay on automatically. Am I doing this correctly, or have I missed something? -
@Bertuz May be the bug is happening in the moment you uncage.
Do not uncage and let see if works good in your side
-
@huffer2 Yes that’s the way. Seems surprisingly error-prone… would be nice to have auto-laze timer.
Apparently laser-mavs are a newer weapon kludged onto older F-16 avionics.
-
@airtex2019
Yes I agree. Maybe that can be corrected in a future update. -
@huffer2 to be clear, I wasn’t suggesting it’s a BMS bug or “kludge”… I suspect it’s this way in real life.
judging from comments in other threads, it sounds like newer platforms like Super Hornet have better avionics to support this weapon.
-
@airtex2019 That is very interesting. I have no problem holding down the trigger till impact, especially if that is what RL viper drivers do. I checked the BMS docs, even the Dash-34, and could not get a answer.
-
@huffer2 The BMS-Training.pdf definitely suggests to set the laser-time to 40 seconds.
But then below on the following page, explains that you have to keep lazing from launch to impact.
-
@airtex2019
Setting the Laser ST time to 40 sec, to me it sounds like the Autolas feature would kick-in when the time to impact would reach 40sec. Using LGBs the autolas works that way. That is what I was trying to understand with the Mav-Ls. -
@airtex2019 BTW, I have read that training section many times.

No you aren’t, you found a bug
I have an F-16 loaded with two AGM-65L (laser ones). I’ve powered them up and wait for several minutes.
AGM-65L take only 10s to go through BIT test, and then they’re ready.
I have uncaged them, showing an S in the right WPN MFD.
It does not say OPER but STBY instead. There is no “Not timed out” message.
That was wrong and is fixed in a next release
I trigger my laser with first detent. Now a block will appear but stays in the middle of the screen. Even when maneuvering, it stays exact in the middle. I’ve seen videos where this laser marker is moving on the screen.
Bug nr 2, also fixed in a next release
Fortunately when I fire the maverick it will track and hit, but it feels there is a small bug for not going into OPER and a moving laser spot indicator.
Well spotted, thanks

Thanks for the feedback! Feels great to contribute to this amazing piece of art!
