Unsolved 4.37.2 - VR - At night

Version
4.37.2 (x64)Build
521Detailed Description
I recently flew a mission at night and noticed that the visibility at night in VR is by far not as good as compared to the normal screen. Weather was not a factor (fair conditions, visibility > 10km, cloud base 5000 ft).
It looks like flying in fog or bad weather to my eyes. However… the screenshots look normal (doesn’t make sens to post them - they look fine).
Probably it is because of some reflections of the lenses.
So if I need some practice in flying IMC… I just need to fly at night.Question
Are there any plans/ideas/suggestions how to improve the visibility at night?Hardware
I’m using a Pico 4 with Virtual Desktop on highest possible resolution settings (3120 x 3120; Steam VR Resolution = 100%) with an AMD 6800XT and Ryzen 7 7700X.Falcon BMS User.cfg
///////////////// // VR Settings // ///////////////// set g_nVRHMD 0 // Enables the OpenVR (default 0/false). set g_fVRZOOMFOV 60 // Field of view in degrees for VR ZOOM (default 60.0). set g_nVRHMCSEYE 0 // HMCS renders, 0 Right eye, 1 Left eye (default 0/false). set g_fVRResolution 1.0 // VR resolution multiplier. 1.0 by default. set g_bVRParallelRenderThread 1 // Enable Multi-Thread optimization for VR set g_bVRNoPresent 1 // This will not display the companion window in VR (only HMD will show image in 3d). set g_fVRIPDMultiplier 0.9 // adjust world scale, default = 1.0.

@Razor161 remove the last line (world scale)in your config and report back.

@1508AD
I did a quick test (set g_fVRIPDMultiplier 1.0) but the result is the same.
The screenshot looks fine but what I see is still a bit „foggy“. -
@Razor161 Lenses.

@Dee-Jay
Yeah… Probably. -
@Razor161 Its an unavoidable feature of pancake lens. with black/dark background and some bright objects, light get reflected between the lens layers and 'spill’s into the dark areas.

Hello!
Yesterday I had my first night flight with the VR, and I had exactly the same feeling.
It was a dark night with lets say “light noise”, causing this fog feeling.
Yes, it lowers the total VR experience, but again VR is outstanding, even with such disadvantages.
My headset is the HP Reverb G2, which I am generally very happy with it.
But when I have the chance, I will go for some even better.
Until then, I really enjoy the experience of this great VR feature 4.37 brought us, as if I am discovering flight sim from the begining… -
I also just tried a mission in pitch dark. No moon. I dimmed the pit as much as I could (hud/mfds, outside lights off), weather sunny, with minimum clouds. altitude approx 6000. time was approx 1230am, season summer. I did not try it at more marginal dawn/dusk times. 4.37.2, Pico 4
What i noticed…
-
Simulated lights on the ground looked clear and bright
-
Stars also looked clear and bright.
-
Visibility ahead was pretty much flat black (as I would expect).
-
there is a general greyness rather than black background, but this is due to the headset panels, and its there even when looking into a dark pit. (We need to wait for micro led panels with local dimming to improve on that one)
-
For me the experience is very immersive, and apart from some minor artefacts from clouds, I’m not sure what I would want improved.
-
As there was little or no light in the scene, the lens ‘flare’ effect was non existent.
-
Others mileage will differ with different headsets and rigs.
As an aside, the most immersive experience I’ve had to date in VR is a BMS bad weather night ILS approach. The way the global illumination with the strobes lights up the clouds as you are passing through them, coupled with the fact that you are ‘enclosed’ in the headset (could never get the room dark enough with a 2d screen), with butter smooth frames, is something to be experienced to be believed.
I once again tip my hat to the devs.
