Configurable alpha setting for Radio Subtitle Window?
-
BMS Devs…
@Seifer
Is there an undocumented Falcon BMS.cfg setting that allows me to set the alpha level (transparency) for the Radio Subtitle Window background? It would be much more readable with a more opaque background and not so dependent on what (sky, clouds, ground, water, etc.) happens to be behind that window when you’re trying to read it. -
No there isn’t. But you can change it in the game. Both in terms of alpha transparency and color.
It’s a bit goofy to get at it, I’ll admit, but you can change it on the fly in the 3D world.
What you do is hold down the CTL (control) key then left click on the “close” button (top right corner of the subtitle window. Doing that brings up an “options” pop-up. One of the things in there is a slider for alpha. You can also pick a different background color if you like…can be handy in some light conditions, I agree

Wow! Thank you very much. I’ll try it and see if the change is persistent.

@Boxer - Sadly, changes made via this method are not persistent when you restart the executable. But I really appreciate the info. Maybe in a future release, they’ll make the background of the box such that text is easier to read. Thanks again.

@SoBad - yeah, I know. This is something a little strange with the maintainer of the ImGui library that is used to code up these windows in our game code. Fundamentally that person doesn’t want to support persistent data for these window style elements so there are no lib functions to support that (unlike for example window placement and sizing data that are persisted into the related ini file). That doesn’t mean this can’t be done somehow separately by the game code logic. It’s more just explaining why it wasn’t already done…the lib doesn’t readily support it so it wasn’t a quick add when the code was originally written for these subtitle-in-a-window capabilities.
I’ll read your question as a reminder that we probably have to figure out a way to do this through our own code extension. [Logically the data belongs in the ImGui-related ini file not the game cfg file.]

@Boxer seems like there are cfg options for the MiniHud and RadioMenu … just not the comms responses?
set g_nMiniHudAlpha 50
set g_nRadioMenuAlpha 50 -
@airtex2019 Thank You for the information. Do You know if there are any way to change the size of the letters in labels in BMS ? I have not found any clues.

set g_nMiniHudAlpha 50
set g_nRadioMenuAlpha 50Yes! That’s what I was hoping for. Something like
set g_nRadioSubtitlesAlpha 50
Maybe someday…

@Boxer merging thread https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/25141/hard-to-read-radio-subtitles
I don’t seem to have a little ‘x’ in the corner of my subtitle window. The radio-menu window has one… but ctrl-click doesn’t do anything (just closes it).
The mini-hud has a resize-grabber in the lower-right corner, but no ‘x’ in upper corner.
I do have
set g_bWindowedRadioSubtitles 1
. Is there anything else needed to make that work? (Something in the 3DUiSettings.ini maybe?) -
@airtex2019 can you show me what that window does look like??
A guess… If it’s transient then you don’t get the “x”. You toggle the transient behavior with OTWToggleSubtitleWindow. The “x” gadget when shown in the window and when clicked without a modifier will return the window to transient mode.
-
@Boxer ah yes that worked, thanks. I forgot that was a thing.
good news is, changes made to transparency there, do apply to both the transient-popup view and the movable-dialog view.

Well, you KNOW I’m following this and tried it. It actually works, but it is a dance that has to be repeated every time I quit and re-start F4. The settings don’t ‘stick’. I sure hope the BMS Devs address this.

@SoBad for the avoidance of doubt, Boxer is a BMS dev …
yes hopefully this makes it into an update. until then, it will have to part of our ramp start checklist
