FHD vs WQHD Monitor recommendations
-
Hello everyone,
I use TrackIR and a MSI Optix 27" FHD gaming monitor for Falcon BMS flying.I find that it’s often difficult to make out labels on buttons etc in the cockpit.
Can people with a higher res monitors give some advice to improve this?
a) Increased resolution ie WQHD
b) Larger monitor
c) Both!?My system is a Notebook Ryzen 4800hs with RTX2060 so I understand a higher res monitor would drop some FPS.
Thank you,
Pat -
Used to use a 24" FHD monitor
Currently use a 32" 4K monitor but run Windows and games at non native QHD (1440p)
Never really had any issues with labels though.
You can zoom in with the mouse on the pit - but have never had too.
Higher resolution and higher refresh rates do need more resource so you may see a drop in performance depending. With BMS less likely because it is still very lightweight relatively speaking.

I do not think higher resolution will make it easier to see the button labels. Although some FSAA might help. I got myself a 34" widescreen WQHD and at first I wanted to get higher FOV. But that led to cockpit elements being very far away from the viewpoint (my pilot’s head/eyes). I have spent some time fiddling with the FOV values. I have adjusted the regular FOV to be closer to elements. My ideal FOV is when I can look down into my lap (kneeboards) and easily make out digits on the HSI which I find are the smallest. You could play around with these:set g_fDefaultFOV 100
set g_fNarrowFOV 25
set g_fFOVIncrement 5
set g_fMaximumFOV 120The NarrowFOV is the one which the Look Closer command will adhere to

@patsaunders what default FOV do you like to use, with TrackIR?
A lot depends on that, for casual legibility of numbers on mfd and hsi, etc. Without leaning in or zooming.

@jayb @airtex2019 @Migbuster
I had left the FOV as the default BMS setting (not sure what that is).
To control the FOV, I had set it to RTRY3 on my X56 throttle, using the BMS slider mapping setting, and I would often zoom in a little to make things a bit clearer.And I didn’t know about the “Look Closer” command - that might solve many of my issues - I will try these next time.
In longer term some 32" monitors might be worthwhile…

@patsaunders Here’s a couple screenshots at 60 fov, at 4k.
Everything is very legible at that narrow fov… even zooming back to 80 fov, would probably fine, at 1440p
At 4k, the limit for easy readability of things like ownship bullseye location on the MFDs, is about 100 fov.
(If you go widescreen 3440x1440p, remember the “fov” is measured horizontally across the screen… so you’ll want to set fov to around 80, to look the same as a 2560x1440p display.)

@airtex2019 Thanks for taking the time for the screenshots, that’s helpful.
Upgrading 2 monitors just for Falcon BMS is getting expensive…!
