FPS accuracy?

Is it possible that the reported FPS in the top left corner could be wrong? I get 20-25 on an airbase, and obviously higher when I get flying. I see people posting much higher FPS numbers, and I have a pretty robust build. Does everybody use the reported FPS in BMS as their number? Or is there some other FPS tracker I’m not aware of?
Just curious, because I’m fine until refueling, but I don’t think it’s a FPS issue.
I can run 20% cumulus with lowered res clouds. These seem to hit it harder than anything else.

Fraps will report FPS also.

Interestingly enough, I took it off crossfire and increased FPS by 10. I was getting 18ish FPS during ramp start vs 27 with crossfire disabled.
For the record:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 (black) @ 3.81 (afraid to push too much)
Asus M4-78TE MB
8 GB Corsair Ram DDR3 (top of the line 4 years ago)
Win 7 64 bit
2x AMD Raedon HD 6800 GFX cardsShould I be doing better???

What is FRAPS? And how is it different than CRTL-z +R?
-
Disabling crossfire dets better FPS, but not anywhere near the 40-60 that others are reporting! It certainly seems flyable at mid-upper 20’s! I found FRAPS, and the numbers are similar. Am I missing something?

Fps counters can be wrong due to graphics settings / drivers / hardware / the sim itself. In bms as well as fsx, I can get it to run smoother, yet report the same or less fps change. Focus more on how smooth it is to look around with your headtracker and how everything runs, instead of the number.

FPS is relative. You have to use a running average and there are many ways to do that, with different resulting values.
