HUD config needs tweaking
-
AngryCowAirplane,
You rock! It works perfectly. Thanks! Hey, do you use X-Plane? I am also trying to do the same thing with versions 9 & 10 and am looking for some HUD config files to edit there as well. No luck so far…

Nah no xplane, just BMS
-
Would you guys share pictures of your HUDs working please?

:wfish:
@AV8R:Would you guys share VIDEOS of your HUDs working please?

I would have to put it back together, which is not possible this period…

Here is a video of mine that I recently recorded.

Please tell us what Rocket science material and projection system u used to achieve such outcome? also how much did it cost?
For my likes looks way realistic and wow…

Thank you, I got most of my information from Mike’s flight deck.
http://www.mikesflightdeck.com/hud/head_up_displays.htmlI used a 5" diameter magnifying lense ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002L13RDS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ), although I now wish I had found a 5.5" if it exists. $4
A first surface mirror from ( http://www.firstsurfacemirror.com/acrylicfirstsurfacemirrors.htm ) $25 after shipping
A teleprompter mirror from ( http://www.telepromptermirror.com/telepromptersglass.htm ) $40 after shipping
And an LCD display for the imager off ebay ~ $60 (VGA+2AV+Reversing Controller+7" INNOLUX AT070TN84), not sure if this is the best display for the job but it works for me so far until i find better.
I was very lucky I think to have the angles and focal lengths work right in my setup, I really didn’t do much math or engineering on this to ensure that If your main screen isn’t right close to your cockpit I think you will have to find a pricey custom lens for the job.
-
wow maybe next time consider instead of the lcd display and the mirrors a pocket projector???
Really nice…
//Cough
Waiting for comments… about the how this couldn’t be done and needed ton’s of expensive and very strange and peculiar hardware alongside some Hardcore Math from NASA and etc…

Looking really good, but a nogo for me as long as I use the Trackir. But some day when we ger 180 degree view and I have 3 projectors
-
I use trackir also (atleast i did up until 5 days ago when it burnt out, thats why it was not in the vid), it is only a little disorienting to me. I have both the hud only view and the 3d cockpit set at the same fixed FOV, so I can switch back and forth between them and have the hud remain in the same spot and same size easily with shift funtions on my hotas. Also have a small deadzone set in the trackir so if I am looking strait ahead in 3d pit, I can be relatively certain that the hud info is accurate. It would be great if there was a function/option to have the 3d hud image turn off if the trackir leaves the deadzone. Certainly that 3 projector setup would be way better!, but this is still worth it i think until that happens.
As for the pocket projector, I would have to look into that, but I can’t see that working like this. There is really only 2 reasons I don’t like my lcd display, and thats because it isnt quite tall enough, I wish I had gotten a 4x3 ratio one, some info towards the bottom of my hud right now gets cut off. Other than that, there is just a slight bit of backlighting that you can notice in dark flying, a higher black level would be nice.
-
I have tested with a pocket projector, and the result was really bad (display wise and sharpness + brightness) is was like the projecton just went through the hudglass.
Not good so I returned the mini projector. -

What were the sizes of the surface and teleprompter mirrors you ordered, 5"? And if a 5.5" magnifying lens can be found, would the size of these also increase? Are those HUD Supports from Mike at Viper Panels or custom?

So, what exactly is the issue with TracIR and a HUD? Can’t you just extract the HUD to the HUD monitor?

The length and width of the mirrors I ordered were 6"x10". I ended up cutting down my teleprompter mirror to about 8" in length and gave it the curved top. The first surface mirror I have a feeling should be shorter too, but I’m abit afraid to mess with it right now. Basically I would say you want the width to be the max you can fit inside your hud box. Definately want the mirrors to be the same width or wider as the lens. If I were to do it differently I would go for bigger lens, maybe even 6" diameter (but i don’t think the real thing is that big), a 4x3 aspect ration display, and actually do the math to get it to all work out perfectly.
I do have a slight stretching that occurs at the top 1/4th of my hud due to not having the angles right (why I think I need to shorten my first surface mirror). I made the HUD supports myself, and plan on modifying them a bit to try and correct this stretching.

Some of the problems are:
-
the hud is always showing you information as if you were looking strait ahead, so if you are looking 5 degrees to the left with your track ir, all your hud cues will be off 5 degrees also. This is why I have hud only view mapped to a button on my stick to quickly switch to if I need accurate shooting cues, or when landing usually. Also have a small deadzone set so i can stay in 3d if I want, but sometimes I move my head more than I think.
-
HMCS is gonna overlap with your hud when you use that.
-
I think formation flying is a little more disorienting if you like to look to the side, cause its gonna look like your hud is flying at whatever you are looking at.

Hi, Mr AngryCowAirplane,
First, please excuse my poor english because i’m french!
I’m from the french combat flight sim forum Check6,
and as a pit builder, i saw your great work on youtube.
You found the very solution to our problem, making a true HUD for BMS,
so I have posted the links for your videos and informations to my community.I have to say a big THANKS, and congratulations for this!
By the way, your home cockpit is amazing!

I now got the 200 degree view with my 3 full HD projectors so now next project is to make my HUD working
