JDAM in Israel theatre campaign….

And I cannot do this with other types of bombs ?
No not with that accuracy - only LGBs have similar accuracy - but with LGBs you cant self lase through a cloud base for one thing.

I just tried using jdams in BMS and it seems im not fast enough to cycle throug the steerpoints, but why do I have to use the MAN Mode to drop them ? In another thread someone just used CCRP and didn’t switch between CCRP and MAN.
-
Afaik, you dont have to switch to man mode - but, if you do there seems to be a range advantage which increases with release altitude. I think optimum release altitude for best range is up to angels 25. After a certain altitude, the range advantage diminishes. Thanks to Tiag and the 185th for teaching me such things

Have you changed your spacing to 999? This should give you enough time to cycle through the steerpoints?

There’s a better way:

Thank you very much for these answers! Finally got them to go where i want them to.

Easy bombing technique…:D:D:D

On a related note, has anyone tried making markpoints with the TGP, then dropping multiple JDAMs? I have tried it a few times (in different theaters) and even though I set 4 separate targets, all JDAMs fall onto target #4. If I set targets from the recon screen they work perfectly, and hit all 4 targets. Something seems amiss when using the TGP.

It works using TGP to set the markpoints but when you drop the JDAMS, TGP mustn’t be in IR mode, and the FCR needs to be SOI.

Gotta try that.

I completely turned off my TGP and dropped with FCR as SOI and it still didn’t work. I’ll have to try again.

Since the weapon has your target in its memory, and, if you are within twenty eight kilometers (15NM) and fast and lofting, that is the perfect time to pickle the weapon. Only the MAN mode will let you instantly pickle the weapon. It is the perfect match for the GPS deployment. As a matter of fact, these weapons are pretty good at taking out SAM radar vans, the stationary ones at least. In the real world, the Air Force is now using GPS weapons which have a IR sensor head, so that if the target is moving the GPS weapon will still be effective against it.

Don’t forget. The SMS page has two profile pages. This is perfect for GPS employments. PROF 1 can have your mode set to CCRP. And, PROF 2 can have the mode set to MAN. When you are ingressing into the target area you can select PROF 1 to get a steering line to the target and a DME to the target. When you get within the 15NM ring you can select PROF 2. Now you can just loft the bomb. After you pickle this GPS weapon, press the Up-Down switch UP on the lower left part of the ICP. Get back down low and head for the new steer point and start the process again. Practice and practice in weather so bad lesser men wouldn’t even fly. If you do you will learn to appreciate how great these weapons really are.

I’ve had more luck by dropping in CCRP with 999ft spacing, switching STPT between drops. I used to use MAN but it only worked for me if I was dropping on fewer than 2 targets.

I’ve tried it and found it to work swimmingly with the spaced ripple drop method. I’ve found that about 600ft gives me a good interval when flying at 15-20kft.
The only things I can think of in your case is either your TGP isn’t in Slave mode (i.e. it’s in area or point modes), or if the FCR and TGP are on the same MFD and the TGP is selected. In which case the designated target won’t actually change when you select a new steerpoint until you cycle through the FCR again. -
FCR and TGP are on separate MFDs, so it had to be that my TGP was in Area mode. The last time I tried it I was at KOTAR, used the TGP to make markpoints on 4 of the bullseye targets. Set TGP to STBY, went around for CCRP drop with 999ft spacing, switching STPTs between releases. Turned off target and turned the TGP back on. All 4 bombs landed on the last target I marked with the TGP.

Here are a couple of things which I have learned that could be helpful. 1. After you recon, check your DTE page and check the targets at the steer points you have designated. If this shows blank in the DTE page, you will need to recon again and select the targets and assign them. Check the DTE again and is should show the name of the target and the coordiantes for it. The fabulous thing about the GPS weapons is that they have a range, because they have internal guidance that gets its steering from the GPS sattelites in the area. They are extreemly accurate, even at zero visabiliy. You can release them in the CCRP mode but the best way to do it is to use the CCRP mode on the way to the target, mostly to get the current range to target. When you get in range you will not have any futher need of radar or lazer. You can then pull up and loft the bomb. Using the manual mode allows you an immediate release of the weapon, perfect in this case. And the weapon is fire-and-forget. The only thing in BMS is that presently, these GPS weapons have their range set at 2km which is just over a mile, rediclous. It should be set at 28km. That is 15 nautical miles. At about 500 knots, you might need to get a little closer.

can someone elaborate on this? you’re saying that the GBU-31 has a much higher range than avionics say? say i’m at 5000 feet and i start a 600~ kn ascent at 30 degrees, at what range could i throw the bomb on manual and it would reach a target? and at which stage of my ascent should i throw? high? low?

Currently there is some issue with Aerodynamics of bombs in BMS.
That allows bombs to fly waaay further than they can in RL.hopefully it will be fixed in future version.

I thought it was realistic for JDAMs to fly ~10nm from high altitude/speed?
