Intel i5 vs i7?
-
Much thanks to the BMS team! It has been 20 years since I played Falcon 3.0 and I feared that I would never get to play a realistic viper sim again. Thanks to you guys, it is still possible!
I am just getting back into the saddle now and preparing to buy a new system to run BMS. I see in the system requirements section that BMS “rocks” on i7 (or equivalent,) and i5 is “recommended.” But most people I talk to tell me that the hyperthreading features of i7 chips are not used by games and can even make them slower.
I understand that BMS is very CPU intensive, but would like so save a couple hundred bucks on CPU and use it for better graphics if hyperthreading is not used by BMS.
Can I please get some expert advice on CPU choice? For an equivalent core count and clock rate, will an i5 CPU match the BMS performance of an i7 chip, or do I really need to spend the extra money ?
I plan to run BMS on a single 1080p screen to start, and then upgrade to 4K in a year or two when I have more money for an upgraded GPU.
Many Thanks in advance!

I’m no expert by any means, but the “recommended” would be best minimum, while “it rocks” would be most preferable.
I run BMS on a Haswell i7-4770k (no overclocking), and believe me when I say, it does indeed rock, even with my “ancient” GTX275 GPU.
Buy the best you can afford would be my advise here.

Unless you have plenty of cash in the top draw, I would go for the top i5 “k” version. (i5 6600k)
i7s generally are clocked higher because they can. So if your into overclocking as a hobby go for an i7 “k” (i7 6700k)
Do not buy the “p”, “s”, “m”, “H” and a few others versions. Have a quick here. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/processor-numbers.html
