Break lock on Sidewinder…
-
Hi Folks,
Question - say your sidewinder locks up on the wrong target - how do you break the lock to work on another aircraft ?
Regards,
Scott -
Cage it again. Obviously TMS down as well, since more often than not people also put a radar lock on as well.

Hi Scrim,
I could have sworn I tried the cage more than once - and - the seeker symbology never reappeared on the HUD… Just to confirm - what is the HOTAS label in the controller setup for the cage function ?
Thanks for responding…
Regards,
Scott -
press U key to cage/uncage and also break radar lock should work if you move your nose and seeker head away from locked target
-
OK thanks - I’ll try again when I get home tonight… Appreciate the help…
Regards,
Scott -
And check in the SMS page if you have it on BORE (seeker slaved to HMCS) or SLAV (seeker slaved to the radar) mode.

Which symbol is on the aircraft you locked up? Is it a diamond, or the square? If it’s a diamond, it means the IR missile has found and locked on to it. If it’s the square, you’ve got a radar lock.
-
Hi Scrim,
It’s a diamond IR lock - I didn’t lock him up with the radar…

In that case AFAIK, it really should just be a matter of caging the Sidewinder again. Not sure which key, but if you do it should get slightly smaller and move to the center of the HUD.

It’s won’t recage because it’s in TD which kinda doesn’t work right in BMS. The uncage consent system isn’t like IRL so you can’t have threshold detection without consent to uncage. The result is in TD if you recage it IMMEDIATELY uncages except in super marginal cases so it seems like you can’t recage but really it’s just recage-autouncage so fast you don’t notice.
Switch it to BP and you’ll have manual control over caging.

TD, BP?
Is that depending on setup and missiles? I always fly with AIM-9X and the JHMCS on all the time. Would that cause any sort of differences in how Sidewinders work in terms of caging?
I’m asking because it all sounds foreign to me. My experiences has been this: I can radar lock targets, and the Sidewinder diamond will follow. If I uncage, I can always cage it again and put it on something else. If I don’t use radar, I can uncage the Sidewinder when the diamond is close to the target, and it’ll lock on to it. If I cage, it’ll be possible to target something else with it, just like when I cage after a radar lock. Is there more to it than this? -
Threshold detection and bypass.
Yes, TD/BP is a caging setting. If you’re radar-cued you won’t be able to uncage (manually at least) when in TD because it trips the threshold for tone. In BP you have manual (bypass) control over cage. TD/BP should work the same in all models P L M X.
If you have free use of caging it sounds like you’re in BP. TD in bore/HMCS-off for example you’ll notice that if you fly the closed diamond over a target it’ll uncage and track without any button presses. In BP it won’t even if radar-slaved. I’ve had a wingie shoot me down by firing a caged radar-slaved AIM-9 at a bandit but it decided I was a better target off the rail as it uncages on launch. The lesson their was always uncage before shooting.

I see. Never come across choosing between TD and BP before. And yup, firing a Sidewinder without uncaging it and hearing a good solid tone is definitely a big no-no

It’s a yes yes if you’re working for the other side covertly. But make sure you locked up friendlies in that case.
