Music On
-
Hi fellow aviators,
I have a question about how the jammer works. As far as i understand, there are three switches/buttons related to the jammer:-
The switch labeled OPR, STBY, OFF
-
The power button on the TWA panel
-
The JMR Switch on the CMDS panel
I’m trying to figure out which of these actually “turns the music on”. I’m a little bit confused by the description in the BMS manual.
-
-
- is for radar and emíssion silence - nothing to do with jammer
- wrong again. read a manual !
- only to alow automatic countermeasures to turn the jammer on.
You need to set ECM POWER (left console to ON) and use CMS hat (HOTAS) for jamming. (don#t remember which direction ATM)

I have looked for it in the BMS manual and there it says:
**USER_FUNCTION(SimEcmPowerOn): This command sets the power switch on the ECM panel, left console to the OPR position which is in effect the power ON switch for the jammer pod (if present). Note that the JMR control on the CMDS panel just controls whether the ALE-47 can operate the ECM in AUTO mode now – that control does not affect the jammer pod power at all; use this new one instead for power control!
USER_FUNCTION(SimEcmPowerOff): This command sets the power switch on the ECM panel, left console to the OFF position which is in effect the power OFF switch for the jammer pod (if present). Note that the JMR control on the CMDS panel just controls whether the ALE-47 can operate the ECM in AUTO mode now – that control does not affect the jammer pod power at all; use this new one instead for power control!**
Also whats confusing me is the following:
**NOTE: There are also two new keystrokes that are used to control electrical POWER to the jammer.
SimEcmPowerOff
SimEcmPowerOnThese may be used as necessary if the pilot wanted to give consent to dispense chaff/flares, but not jam a threat. Note that above for the CMS switch “ECM Stby” means the ECM will not radiate (jam a threat). “ECM enable” means the ECM will jam a threat. If SimEcmPowerOff is selected, you will not be able to jam any threats and “ECM Stby” and “ECM enable” will have no effect since the jammer is off. They will however, still change the dispenser mode (semi from auto, consent).**
I searched for the callbacks SimECMConsent and SimECMStandby but couldn’t find them in neither Kolbe’s keyfile nor the BMS.key

That’s 'cause they are not switches in the F-16…
okay, a brief synopsis of that part of the BMS manual seems to be in order. Basically turning power onto the jamming pod doesnt tell it to start radiating. The ALQ-184 you get in BMS is IRL a deception jammer, meaning that it needs some incoming signal to repeat back to the victim radar anyway. Turning it on means that it has power, computers can operate, it can assess incoming radar signals… but it cannot emit. It needs consent to emit, you see. You can provide that using the CMS hat on the SSC. CMS down (or aft) will give consent to emit, and CMS right (or outboard) will cancel consent to emit.
The reason you wont find those callbacks in kolbes file is that they are handled by using the CMS hat instead. That plus the rest of that part of the BMS manual ought to clear things up.

Ah, ok this clarifies things a little.
Guess the best would be to try some things out and learn by doing and of course spend more time with the manuals.
I’m really trying to ask as few as possible dumb questions, but sometimes that doesn’t really work out as desired:roll:
Oh and for the power button on the TWA panel: Sry, i mixed somethings up there:oops: -
Better it happens here as in flight
-
Yeah especially if those mishaps concern complex stuff like the ECM system.
Now here’s the funny thing. I flew Lock ON FC2 for a very short period of time and there preferably the SU 27 (loved that plane, still miss it some times). When i encountered lets say a F15 in BVR i would just turn my jammer on, hitting one button. So i wanted to create a DX command for something like that for my hotas.
So in the end by trying to do that i actually learned A LOT about the ECM system more or less as a side efect.
Also i learned not to make any assumptions about how a fighter aircraft actually works based on that brief FC2 experiance. Should have known that better
Still wouldn’t want to miss the occasional mishap in flight though. I still remember the first time i forgot to turn the air source knob on.
Well it taught me a valuable lesson, never forgot that since that time.So thanks for your help
