DLink modes & target assignment
-
It’s been a long time since I couldn’t tell the difference between ASGN mode and DMD mode. Cross checked the manuals and found something interesting.
The BMS Dash-34 says that both the DMD and ASGN modes have the option to make assignments to other flight members. While the MLU manuals doesn’t explicitly point out whether the DMD mode also has the function to send target info, but there’re some images that can make it clear:
Note that in MLU M1~M3 avionics, there’s no assignment numbers adjacent to OSB 7~10 in DMD & CONT modes. And that’s very different from what BMS has simulated.
Well maybe there’s something different in USAF vipers?

Nope, this is a mistake of the MLU tape manual. We have verified that in real, the ASSGN and DMD have the same possibilities and the same avionics.
Sometimes, even real manual make mistakes. -
out of interest, why are they different modes in the real jet?
-
CONT… well that you know. DMD and ASSGN is just a heritage when system was different.

The difference between ASGN and DMD is hard to understand. Whatever difference there existed in MLU1 was gone by MLU2. It must not have made sense to the manufacturer either. In MLU2 tape doc it is mentioned “Assignments can be made in the DEMAND mode.” So the only difference (that I see) between ASGN and DMD from MLU1 tape doc is gone by MLU2. BMS is definitely MLU2ish. Look how complicated MLU3 datalink symbols look!

First, tape 7 is almost out, so you are discussing about 1-3 lol… Not necessary meaning that intraflight datalink has been changed since older ones…
But, some background datalink functionality is different from what we have now, and I don’t mean just a couple of symbols but link initiation, update patterns between the 4-ship, radio details affecting update timings etc that would be interesting enough to have and are not detailed in a manual.
As for the simple answer on the original question, when the DL switch is OFF no numbers or the link modes are displayed (CONT/ASGN/DMD) on the mfd, when is ON the 1-4 numbers are displayed in all modes.

you will note that in the original question, the modes are displayed without the numbers.

Sometimes, even real manual make mistakes.
Not sometimes… all over the place. Maybe because manuals are prepared from external constructors without access to technical details or secret stuff, specially if for partner country with different selected systems that knowledge is limited or controlled.

@LJQCN101 The MLU M3 displays data with combination of DL and LINK16 data, are not “@yet?!?” implemented ,you can review the MLU M3 manual to see that combination.
So far the DL in BMS 4.32 is MLU tape1
