Need some thoughts on best Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 graphc settings
-
Currently running BMS with Tom’s tiles, and I am getting some low FPS.
I believe my machine has the horsepower:
I7- 4790 @ 3.6 GHZ
RAM Mem - 16 GB
Other memory - 2 TB
Geforce GTX 970 card (drivers - 9.18.13.4752 - latest one)
Running Win 8.1 64 bit. However with Tom’s Tiles, I get a sever slow down (especially low over water when landing). I tried different combination of settings, but unless I downgrade the water settings, the slow down occurs.
Other games that I have (like TS2015, and ROF - very graphic intensive) doesn’t have a problem and I can run full graphic with no issues.
If you have a GTX 970, could you share what your settings are for the card?
Here are my 3d Setting for the 970.
Ambient Occlusion - Performance
Anisotropic Filtering - Application Controlled
Antialiasing FXAA - Off
Antialiasing Gamma correction - On
Antialiasing Mode - Application Controlled
Antialiasing Transparency - Off
CUDA GPUs - All
DSR Factors - Off
Maximum Pre-rendered Frames - Use the 3D application setting
Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA) - Off
Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration - Single Display Performance Mode
Power Management - Adaptive
Shade Cache - On
Texture Filtering - Anisotropic sample option - Off
Texture Filtering - Negative OD Bias - Clamp
Texture Filtering - Quality - Quality
Texture Filtering - Trilinear Optimization - On
Triple Buffering - Off
Vertical Sync - Use the 3D application setting
Virtual Reality Pre-rendered Frames - 2 -
Hmm! what fps do you get then ? i have nearly the same setup just using win 7 64 bit and driver 347.09 and setting all 3d as application / default in Nvidia, and multisampling on + quality level 2 V-sync off in BMS i´v got like 70 fps on airbase takeoff and 120-200 fps in the air or over wather in day 1 campagne!! 0hh. running my cpu at 4.2Ghz!!
-
Same Setting as you, only Triple Buffering is set to ON.
Driver is 347.52.
I have also Vsync set to ON and never saw my framerate dropping under 60FPS (not using the Campaign yet, still learning…).Like Gusser, I’m on Windows 7 64 bit.
Rest is [email protected], 8GB Ram etc. etc. -
Do you guys think that because I am running at 3.6 Ghz versus you guys at 4.2 ghz makes the difference?
-
Go on and crank it up!! just ceep a eye on cpu temp !
-
The thing to be most careful about when OCing the CPU is voltage. Drive too much voltage and you can stabilize a huge OC and kill your chip in 6 months. Go for a more sane OC and you can run it for years in that fashion. I have been running my 2700k at 4.4 GHz at almost stock voltages for years with no problems.
In answer to your question though yes I would do a safe OC on your CPU to get you some more free performance.
-
OK…how do I know what a safe OC is for my system?
Secondly. How do you OC?
-
You should easy OC to 4.2 GHz with you´r sys, and to OC go to the bios setting and alter the cpu clock/speed! i´ll guess there is tons of vids on youtube how to OC if you are unsure!! just google it
-
I OC mine to 4.4GHz, IIRC I did add a “very” small amount of voltage so it was stable. You maybe able to get to 4.2GHz without touching the voltage. Here is a place I go for info.
Look for a thread on OC’ing your chip and read the beginners guide to OC etc… Read and understand what you are going to be doing before starting because as mentioned before you can over-stress your CPU and fry it.
I’ve been running mine OC’d for two years about 8 to 10 hours daily with no problem. Cooling is very important as well, your stock cooler may not be sufficient. My CPU is water cooled but there are some very good air coolers as well.
-
IMHO, don’t OC just yet, without making some trial first and trying to understand what’s causing the issue. Your machine is a beast, so it has to run BMS smoothly with no problems at all.
I’m running BMS on a I5 4460 @ 3.2Ghz, Nvidia GTX760 2Gb Win 7 64, everything maxed out at 1920x1080 (vertex shaders, not pixel shaders) and I always get 40-60 fps on the ground and 90-110 fps in the air (V-Sync off).
Just my 2 cents…

Yep, I doubt it is your CPU. Sure you can get a few frames more out of it but removing stutter is usually another story…
Perhaps Windows 8.1 is the culprit?
