I’ve been caught many years ago in a way i will never forget:
It was the time i owned my first computer, the famous Commodore 64. I monthly got the C64 magazine, every month they had serveral programs in machine code to type in. One day they published a routine to read-out the magnetic stripe on credit cards. I thought that could be fun.
Problem: before i could start to type in the machine code i had to typewrite the machine code editor itself. So i sat around 4 hours to typewrite the machine code editor and then around 12 hours to typewrite the routine of the card reader.
After around one week i was ready to start: i opened a 5,25" Floppy and gutted the magnetic disk out, insert a credit card with the magnetic stripe alligned with the reading hole and put it in the 1541 floppy drive. Then i started the routine: i heard reading sounds from the floppy drive, encrypted code appeard on the screen.
Excited that all worked on the first try i pressed the key for de-crypting. For one minute the Commodore worked and then the the text on the screen appeared: “HAPPY APRILS FOOL’S DAY. Sincerly, your C64 magazine editoral staff.”
God damnit, i kicked myself
