Setup Problems

Hi All,
Still very new to BMS and I cannot seem to assign the various buttons on my controllers properly. So, any help would be appreciated.
On the Setup > Controllers screen, what are the proper steps to use the Apply, Save, and Load functions?
Upon pressing the Load button, displayed is “BMS” and “Keystrokes.” What is the difference?
When selecting Controllers I see Keyboard, CH Pro Throttle, and CH Fighterstick. When assigning a button, must I have the relevant input device device highlighted before the assignment attempt?
I tried to follow the steps in the original Falcon 4.0 Manual but I am not sure what is happening or that I doing it properly. Again, nothing worked in the manner I tired for.
I have looked at various online resources and youTube videos but all left me with more questions than answers. For instance, what are “Callbacks?”, Is it necessary to use CH Control Manager? I know it is probably better, but is it necessary? I used it to calibrate my devices but the rest of it overwhelms me.
I really appreciate, in advance, any help as I know that all who participate are doing so voluntarily. This looks like a wonderful improvement to the original game but once again, the complexity is overwhelming me. I had a full head of hair when I downloaded the game last month. Still not airborne.

If you “load” or “save” a file and “apply” it, this file will be used in the future.
If you “save” and overwrite the file which was used already before, I guess, apply won’t be needed anymore because it would load already that keyfile.I don’t know the exact differences, but BMS and Keystrokes have differently assigned keys, you will have to make your own so or so.
But before you do that, try the Ramp Start tutorial, it might be essential for you to know what stands for what.Later on I suggest to take a look at …\Falcon BMS 4.32\User\Joystick\Generic\Kolbe.
He did great work on his key file generator, which will help you to understand the possibilities you have. When selecting Controllers I see Keyboard, CH Pro Throttle, and CH Fighterstick. When assigning a button, must I have the relevant input device device highlighted before the assignment attempt?
Correct, also for the axis it needs to be done like that.
The Keys you assign to functions, are the callbacks. Those callbacks have names, which you will use later on when you modify your keyfile manually.
Mapping all the keys and axises will never stop, at least for me - there are always some ideas how to make things better/easier/worse/more difficult
Cheers, have fun!

IMHO …. the BMS.key keyfile is more suited to a HOTAS setup and (I think) reflects some changes/fixes to be more BMS/HOTAS freindly. The keyfile Keystrokes.key retains more similarity to the older Falcon4 keyboard shortcuts. Either can be functional and either can be used as a foundation for a custom keyfile.
A callback is a BMS command that will initiate some action … whether it’s moving a switch, pushing a button or changing a view … it’s the command that tells BMS what to do. For instance the callback ‘SimSelectSRMOverride’ puts you into dog fight over ride mode and the callback ‘SimDeselectOverride’ cancels the over ride mode.

Take a look into Falcon BMS 4.32/User/Joystick/Generic/Kolbe/CH Fighterstick & Pro Throttle
There’s a document on how to program the stick and throttle.
Also in Falcon BMS 4.32/User/Joystick/Generic/Kolbe there’s an Excel document called BMS-DX-Generator1_6.xls
If it works for CH Stick and Throttle like it does for the X52, using this spreadsheet is pretty easy.
If you don’t know all those functions yet you can just use the assignments already made within the spreadsheet. All you have to do in this case would be to enter the device numbers, select your input device in the output column and then copy and paste the assignments into the keyfile you choose to use. Once you got the hang of it, it’s s so easy you feel like cheating:)
