Used Cougar Seems Mostly Broken
-
Bought off ebay with the uber gimbal upgrade. Seller claims everything was taken apart, cleaned, and 100% in working order.
I’ve contacted him but while I wait - there’s enough wrong at the same time that I’m wondering if I have a Win10/calibration issue or if the throttle is simply mostly busted.
It came well packaged in the original box with an emphasis from the seller on not having impact damage to any of the TQS rotaries
I followed the Win7/10 install instructions here with the 2007 VISTA driver and used the Foxy profile that comes with BMS from Dunc.
Issues:
Comms switch registers nothing in any direction
Radar cursor enable disconnects everything from USB, you have to unplug and replug to get the stick/throttle back
ant and range are stuck with values in the middle and jump around - indicating worn and bad pots.
Dogfight switch does nothing but occasionally register comm left?
speed brake does nothingBasically the throttle axis is smooth and works great, the two rotaries are seeing input but it’s the spike/stuck in the middle bad pot issue
cursor registers nothing until you click it which kills the device until you reconnectStick is 100% functional
Seller was just posting here as a Cougar expert so I do hope this is just something i’ve done wrong - thats a LOT wrong at the same time!

Wild guess: if the seller took it apart, he may have badly reconnected the wire harness from the handle to the PCB
Your symptons really sound like something alike
two offset pin and the whole thing would be all messed upOpen it and check

That was it, thanks a ton! Problem solved

Glad it helped, enjoy the kitty

I was going to blame foxy / win10, but RD hit the problem right on the head, well done!
Have fun with your Cougar. Care to share how much the asking price was?
All the best, Uwe

THIS… is why Im unlikely to sell any of my TM stash to people I know. Never want to be that guy.
Glad it worked out. Protecting the hats, rotaries, and that plastic tqs arm are the bane of shipping an otherwise perfect TM controller via the mail gorillas.

He had it packed to where it would be near impossible to get impact damage - and I knew something was off being that just about the only working part of the throttle was the throttle’s axis.
He offered a full refund and free shipping back to him before I had it sorted.

A mostly unblemished and functional stock Cougar set is worth $300-350 all day long. Another $50 with OEM box and packaging IMHO - and which will almost gaurantee no shipping damage (TM knew what they were doing with that big box full of styrofoam).
Getting a well accepted mod thrown in is pure cream on the top. Ive recieved an UberII and FCC3 that way. Only thing I dont have is an Cubby TQS. But now with a Miles Hall modded TQS, the Cubby TQS is overkill imho.
Almost all mechanical gimbal positional Cougars with or without mods will have some centerplay and deadzone. This is one of the reasons I invested into a force modded Cougar (both FSSB and FCC). Other reasons include: Viper FBW, no moving parts to wear out, no centerplay or deadzone, programmable Force sensitivity and gains, cool factor.

OK, he sounds like a good guy to buy from. Good on you for keeping the name out of it, regardless.
Red saved you both alot of angst and jack.

Why is there so much play on the stick when I’m flying I can’t control maintaining altitude and when I move it just little left or right I’m almost inverted and I have to over correct.
-
Does the axis movement look ok in the controller setup page and/or the thrustmaster one ? Might be a seriously bad pot or a loose ground wire. But importantly did it used to be ok ?

I never could understand how/why that ribbon cable would come loose from the PCB. One of my throttles would do that quite a bit, even though there seemed to be enough slack in the cable. Also, shipping the Cougar in the original box is a must –- my damaged Cougar was a result of the original owner not shipping it in the original box. It’s funny though how I would ask potential buyers for a US$50 deposit for the box (I was asking them to ship the box back to me for when I would sell the no-box Cougar), fully refundable when I get the box back, and they would back off on the deal

I’ve found the UberNXT mod to be quite soft and I suspect you’d have to get used to how “sensitive” it can be to little input.

@ ice. Your barking up the wrong tree I reckon.

Hi all:
I’ve had my TM Cougar from circa 2005 and wouldn’t part with it under any circumstance. While I’ve swapped out my Cougar Stick for my Warthog FCS, I use my Cougar TQS under TUSBA and an AB switch which allows me to move to my Warthog TQS when I’m using DCS. The TUSBA software finally enabled flawless use of the microstick - so I’m a happy camper. Now to my point. I’ve reviewed a number of posts over the years (Cuby included) on cougar mods. Although I haven’t had any major problems (other than a clicky sound on TQ movement), I’m thinking about tinkering with it a bit. Ideally, what mod would you guys recommend? Or, should I just leave well enough alone.
On another front, I’m waiting with baited breath for DCS’s F/A-18 upcoming release. It looks like its going to be a fantastic product. I cut my eye teeth with Jane’s F/A-18 back in "99 followed by DI’s Super Hornet and Graphsim’s Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was my go to flight sim until Falcon 4.0 and Allied Force came along. Now BMS and DCS (not to mention XP, P3D and MSFS) are the bomb. It’s incredible how flight simulation has evolved from those early days. I’m equally excited about TM’s plan to offer a replica of the Hornet FCS about the same time DCS releases its F/A-18 version. So a quick question. Has anybody gotten any scoop on TM’s progress on this project? I’ve been searching for product news with no joy.
