Unusual ? AG radar

Last nights TASMO mission was a blast but, noticed something I have not seen or at least noticed before.
While looking for target for my penguins, I was in SEA mode AG radar as was another member of my flight.

We picked up some targets, bugged them and asked AWACS to ID them (oddly AWACS callsign was Camel) He IDed them as friendly. Hmmm
Hard locked and called Ray Gun, Got a buddy lock response from human F-18 flight at 20+K feet about ~ 40 NM in front of us.

Is it normal to be able to spot and lock AA targets while in AG mode?

I think I’ve heard of such referred to as seeing “birds”. And that it has something to do with the geometry being just right and getting what looks to the radar like surface doppler return.

If BMS actually has this modeled, hats off…but I’d be sort of surprised.

u can see flying objects also on GMT rdr.
A way to identified them is to put the cursor on them and watch them move away quickly from the cursor.

I recall that helos can be locked and in general slow movers close to the ground.

I dont know about the f18 way up at 20k but I splatter helos all the time with agm:pI have seen discussion on this before but the height of the air target you picked up in ag sea mode is surprising to me.

starrats, we thought the same with them being so high, seemed odd.

we’ll run some tests over the next few weeks to see if we can duplicate this.
