GBU 24 A/B failed to hit target
-
Hi all,
I’ve tried the training missions for the GBU, though they are a different model, and I am able to successully hit the targets in the training mission.
In my current campaign mission, I selected a control tower to destroy with two GBU 24 A/B bombs. I locked up the target with the TGP, had the Laser mode set to Combat and both codes were defaulted to 1688, per the briefing screen. The bombs came off the rails fine, Laser set to arm and starting firing at the target 8 secs before impact and the bombs failed to hit the target. I was using CCRP mode for release.
I was at approx 9000ft, 350kts. This has happened several times where I have met all the parameters and the bombs just fail to hit. I thought it might be that the laser codes were wrong, but they have been set correctly. Laser is firing, target locked on TGP in Point mode. Still bombs miss.
Thanks for any tips.

get an ACMI and you will see clearly why the bombs are not impacting the target.

out of the blue bet:
too short laser time if auto lase
20 seconds should be minimum -
Also probably flying too low at 9000ft, I usually go for a minimum alt of 15k with a lase time of 15 seconds.

I’ve had this issue too. Dropping at 12,000 at around 300-350 kts and 16 seconds lasing watch the countdown timer to 0 and nothing. Fly the mission again with GBU-22’s and get 4 perfect hits. I’ve hit with the 24’s as well and then sometimes they don’t go where they should.
Prior to firing I’m in level flight, plenty of distance from the target, solid square around the target. Wait for the flashing circle and the 2nd “T” linee to drop. Hold pickle before it hits the FPM and I see the L flashing.
I’ve also dropped LGB’s from 8k (that was the 22’s) so…. arrghh lol

As IRL. For some reasons (a lot of possible issues), those bombs sometimes loose the laser point. 2.5s after laser loss, guidance switch into “standby/reacquisition” mode and in some case glide almost horizontally … if no laser reacquisition (laser went out of IFOV, or disappeared because of laser energy absorption, masks, laser trap, bad albedo … etc …) may fall up to 3000m long after the target.

I had issues initially with LGBs. If you notice, even though you’re dropping in CCRP, there’s a DLZ bracket for max and min range. I like to drop the bombs at CCRP +3 seconds or so. Since I started waiting to pickle for a second or three after the drop cue, my LGBs hit almost 100% of the time. Of course, you still should generate an ACMI and make sure they’re falling short for the above to help.
Make sure the TGP is on target and not masked. Also, that flashing L you see when you pickle…the weapon release button also fires the laser until the bombs release. You have to be sure the L is flashing on the TGP screen at whatever time is left from impact per your DED setup. I usually put the LASR value at 10 seconds and deliver from 12000 - 18000 ft at >375 KIAS.
It is also possible to start lasing too soon. If you start lasing as soon as the bomb releases, it can fall short because the bomb immediately points to the “spot” and runs out of energy before reaching the target. The Paveway III (your GBU-24) may be better at this than the older Paveway IIs, but I’m not sure how that’s implemented.

Laser in TRNG instead of CMBT?

IIRC differences between II and III are implemented since F4:AF. I heard that III can fly longer distances and are not loosing too much energy when you do early lase.
I never tried those Paveway III bombs because for static targets (for mobile i have GBU-12 and LJDAM) i am using GBU-31 and sometimes also dumbies.Flying 9k feet is a very bad habit. It is too high to aviod radar detection and too low to avoid SHORAD and AAA. So you are in a “ducky zone” where all the anti air weapons can fire at you. You should fly above 14k feet, its better for bombs and for you . Bombs have more time to get on laser spot and you are safe from IR SAMs and low caliber AAA.

Just the other day I dropped Paveway III at <2,000’ from a TFR tree-skimming ingress. That sort of low level delivery is what the III was made for. I thought Paveway II (III?) were unable to reaquire laser if lost. I never tried it intentionally. That is one for the list.
If you watch the bomb in external camera there is an obvious difference between guiding and not guiding. Even if it misses it is good to know which situation happened as correcting for non-guiding and guiding are very different.

PIII can require IRL (if still within FOV/IFOV limits) … I am not 100% sure in game but I would bet it is the same.

Mate as many guys before said…
1. Fly above 14k ( I fly at 20K for LGB dropings)
2. Set laser timing above 20sec ( i use 24sec)
3. If you lost point target make sure you lock or pint in area mode instead)
4. For checks only confirm coordinates of STPT.
5. Test and send an ACMI for us to seeFly safe

Thanks all. Seems I may have been too low to drop the GBU’s. At 15K+, there was no issue on the next sortie.
-
I’ve had a similar issue that I haven’t been able to resolve… well I know the issue, it’s that even though the laser is set to combat, the L does not show up in the mfd… and the laser does not fire. I’ve got auto lase set to 16 seconds.
Any hints?

BMS Training Manual page 96. Misc. panel laser switch?

each jet in a flight has it’s own code right? did you set it up in load out as “first jet=1511, second jet=1512…” and so on? highlighting and un-highlighting the plane tabs to make sure who has what laser code to make sure may be needed.
-
Yep, laser set to armed…

That’s not strictly necessary …. the default can/will work. Even if that were the issue, it wouldn’t keep the laser from firing.

It’s a bug. You armed your laser switch before you set your DED laser page to combat. Disarm the switch change your SOI dms down. Change it back to the FCR, now set your laser page in the DED now arm your laser now SOI the TGP. L

is this bug going to be squashed ? not asking when - we all know its 3-4 weeks ;0)
