Runway lights turn off upon approach
-
Hi all
I was on final for landing at a friendly airport after getting shot up on a BAI mission. I was on final approach, on my own as I had no comms, and suddenly the airport lights went out. No runway lights, taxi lights, apron lights, etc.
Any ideas as to why?
Thanks!

Did you change the tower frequency ?
-
Lights are out at night unless there is someone cleared to land. My guess is someone landed in front of you and the lights went out after they were clear. Did back up radio fail also? If not, you should go to back up radio and enter in tower freq. You can then call in approach and get the light on. Don’t forget to rotate CNI knob from UFC to Back Up

Unfortunately I didn’t know what airport I was approaching so I couldn’t dial in the frequency.

That’s it. If the tower is not talking to anyone, then they shut lights out.

You do know you can search the manuals as well as the forum? A quick search for ‘Runway lights’ brings up a number of references, including:
BMS-Training manual page 50: “In BMS 4.33 the runway lights are not always illuminated at night. ATC will light up the airbase only when an aircraft is in the traffic queue.”
T.O. BMS1F-16CM-1 page 153: “The ALS (runway lights) will stay on for a pre-defined interval or as long as aircraft are in the ATC queue.”
The duration the lights stay on for is adjustable via a falcon bms.cfg variable: set g_nAbLightsSwitchOffDelay (default is set at 150 seconds). Reference BMS-Manual page 248.

Thanks for the reference to the manuals. I should’ve checked there first LOL.
Cheers

It’s always worth searching the manuals first before asking on the forum; you’ll save yourself time and usually get the answer that’s relevant to BMS
I realise the hard copy aficionados love the look and feel of a printed manual, but the ability to quickly search for what I need wins every time for me.

I don’t agree because if everybody read the manual and did a search, this forum like others would be dead

:wfish: There’s plenty to keep this forum alive w/o Q&A.
The emphasis is just showing a little research on ones own part can usually solve the problem as all systems are covered in the manual. The OP got his answer and acknowledged he knows where to look before he posts a question. Some (myself included) just appreciate knowing that someone has read the manual about what they are questioning, before they ask questions. There was nothing to disagree with in Darkmans’ suggestion as it wasn’t offensive in anyway. In fact, some people who are fairly new to the sim don’t even know where to find the manuals in their install, so it is always helpful to point out that the manuals are included in the install.
At any rate, I think the forum would survive as long as BMS lives.

May I ask when was the manual last updated? And even if you do a search on certain subject the result is often outdated

How would you know? did you care to check before spreading BS?
The manuals are not outdated because they have been published for 4.33.
the smaller patches 4.33.1 to 4.33.4 have been published with changelogs and have stated that the documentation suite remains up to date because the patches are mostly stability issues and hardly any content changesso even to this day the bms manuals are pretty up to date

I don’t agree because Falcon4 BMS history proved you wrong. Forum is there to help on topics not covered by manuals and extend the subject. Otherwize ther is no need of manuals, the BMS doc team could enjoy a bit more their free time to fly, and users will again cry about not having thoses manuals like in the past when ppl was pissed off of only having the original , OF and RP manuals do deal with going endlessly from one to another trying to get some answer uncovered by any of them.
Spoon feeding -> still unhappy.

Let’s put it another way, every post made by someone who couldn’t be bothered to check the manuals first may take a minute to read, maybe more. Multiply that minute by the number of people who read that post and you’ve wasted hours of people’s time. I find that disrespectful, don’t you?
Please don’t misunderstand, I fully appreciate that this sim is complex, and getting more so. The ability to search the manuals definitely helps, though I appreciate you don’t always know what to search for at first, which is why there is no substitute for actually reading them too. I also understand that English is not everyone’s first language, though there are some excellent translations that have been released, including the Spanish ones by Blackduke linked in the Documentation sub-forum.
All we ask is that people make the effort to try to find the answers that we’ve provided, because that will save them time and give them the correct answer in the vast majority of cases. If they’re really stuck or confused then the forum is there for any additional help and support they need.
A great deal of thought and time went into the documentation suite, to try and answer the questions people would likely ask and help people get into this challenging and rewarding sim. If you look at the questions about the sim that most often come up on the forum there aren’t that many that weren’t anticipated and covered in the docs.

I too have experienced difficulties when releasing SDBs but only when using ateerpoint data from the DTCand attempting side by side mode. They seem to track in tandem, or only one will come off. Trail mode always works well, and I just use that , but when approaching on the beam side by side mode would be helpful. I’ve seen it work before , probably has more to do with my speed or altitude than anything. Inertial stuff can be finicky.

How does this relate to Runway Lights?
I guess this is what happens when you post in 5 different threads in 10 minutes and don’t bother to check what you’re posting and where
