AGM 158 & Datalink
-
Is it possible to activate the datalink on AGM158 and follow it once launched?
it’d seem this option is available in the reality … -
From what i have read JASSM-ER (extended range one) has WDL (weapon datalink) to make it able to change targets inflight. I am not sure if it has any electro optical system like MITL weapons.
In BMS we have no JASSM and we won’t have as there is a thing called “bubble”. This means that 3D world is rendered in some distance from player’s aircraft. This distance is lower than JASSM range so it would not make much sense to have JASSMs in BMS.

That isn’t 100% accurate, there is a bubble yes but also weapons has their own temporary bubble that deaggregate targets in the area of the target position, so long range weapons can be used. However, currently this temporary bubble is limited to ~70NM from the player’s position, means that the player must be within 70NM of the temporary bubble position in order for it to work. This range can be extended by changing some data but large values are known to cause problems and smaller values were actually never tested AFAIK.

@ I-Hawk
There is also the shared bubble I believe, could this be a factor in the problems experienced in largish MP events. ?
Does the shared bubble also extend to the weapon/SOI bubble ?
I have not looked , but have the bubbles been altered/extended or modified in any way recently ?

The temp bubbles aren’t anything new, they have been in Falcon since ever, original code used them to setup temp bubble for e.g player’s wingman targets area to be deaggregated. I just extended that capability by attaching those bubbles to more stuff that makes perfect sense.
If you want to see what I mean, just try in 4.32 to give an AI flight 20NM from you to attack a target that is outside your bubble, they will release munitions on it and then if you go to look at their weapons camera view, the targets will deaggregate due to camera and you will see all their munitions are missing! Because at the time of munitions release, the target are was aggregated! This is totally broken and been this way since ever. Also for TGP the temp bubble was never working correctly, so I just extended an existing capability that was always in use, but I didn’t really invented anything new…

Source?
The 158 is not a MITL weapon, there is a dedicated datalink on the missile but only for sending back to the plane shooter positional updated for its location and system status, as this is displayed on cockpit HSD.

From what i heard ER variant has WDL which allows retargetting inflight, however i am not sure if it has any MITL possibilities as from what i recall JASSM-ER has no optical sensors.
And do you have any manuals showing this HSD status display? Would be nice to know how it actually looks.

Just guessing here in lack of specific documentation, but it is safe up to a point to assume that re-targeting in-flight the missile to another targets is something very well possible for both variants, since there is no MITL capability as e.g. with the SLAM-ER.
