Balkans 1.1.5 tactics
-
Hi All! Not often I ask for help, but I need help.
Im referring to Battle of Balkans 1.1.5, stand alone version campaign. I’m finding it very challenging, and Im loving every minute. Ive learned a new skill with the manual launch of GBU’s in Israel to defeat the sam’s, but wondering what tactics I need to master to defeat the Balkans SAM’s. Seems to be littered with SA-11’s 13’s, and I’m loosing the battle.
Apologies if this is not the forum (I feel at home here). Apologies if this is has been covered (could not find).
So, AGM-45 arnt quite doing it for me, does anyone have any tips for me, point me in the right direction?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The SA-11 threat circle/range isn’t very big. You can fly the arc around it and find them on your TGP and put a markpoint on them. Then you have several options… loft GBUs, low level AGM-65 attack, etc…

Any tips on ID’ing and putting a markpoint on the SA’11’s (radar’s) rather than its support vehicles in the column ? I struggle with visual from 20 miles out.

SA11 use to “bite” at 10.5 … roughly… so you can get Little closer tan 20 miles… But look out and listen to the RWR… you never know!
Dargerous is when they start moving, because then, you´ll have more cahnces to screw it up, but guided munitions should do the trick.
Take your time going head on the sam group and use TGP with the HUD to mark the vehicles, then select it as your current waypoint, and start arcing before the evil 10.5 mile… with the TGP slaved to return to your marked waypoint, it should be easy to refine location, and come back to the general área of the target if you screw it up. Once you have marked 2 (or more if you dare) fixed locations (if they are not moving), then initiate the attack, and launch several bombs in a single pass… that will destroy them before they start moving, and without launching a single SAM on you… After that, if they start moving, you have to deal with them the same way but with guided stuff (one by one if GBUs or more than one in a single pass if you use Mav´s).
SA11 is kind of slow (Little more than twice the miles, is the time to reach you…)… you´ll have time to look for it a see it, and get used to when you need to start to maneuver.
Try to fly block 0 to maneouver easily, (if you fly block 2 high or 3 you will have more slant range but better angle, and you are a lot less agil), but beware of any other ground batallions down there. Fly always Fast 450-500 (never get inside 1 miles from any unit.)
Flying Block 0 even at 7000´ sometimes is tricky due to ground… don´t shoot if your bombs are going to hit the ground on its way to the target… (sometimes I can see the units… that in fact are in the other side of the hill!!!)Hunt and kill in pairs… you alone will have a hell of a work to do it by yourself … too many units (6 per batallion), and no support at all againts the unseen, or incoming Jets…
As you see, nothing new. You just need to adapt a Little to new distances, and re-practice your hotas tecniques.
Good luck and good hunting!!!
(by the way… SA11 launchers are pretty different from the other vehicles… big time. Just use Recon on the UI, and take a look… Easy to see. And also use x4.0 on the TGP)

Thanks Angalnov, I just needed that direction. It all makes sense now, use the TGP rather than weapon camera (AGM 65’s) etc… use recon to educate myself what each unit looks like. Ive put this into practice with good effect.
Other issue : Any flight that leaves my base gets destroyed, even 4 flight sweep within friendly territory, friendly AI seems a little dumbed down, and enemy ground forces seem to plow through the lines. Is it meant to be biast towards the reds so much? I always return with no weapons on my pylons but loosing the war fast.

Here you caugh me.
Not experienced at all in BfB, but if it goes like in the Online event ,I recall that the T-80/90 (whatever they were) moved really really fast upwards into our territory…. Reviewing the JSTARS in the Intel view, they moved so fast they even went off the top side of the map!!!
Well, waht I see is that Air Defence is an issue, and that trying to stop them by striking is imposible (alone) becuase each batallion has many many units…
Sometimes you have to make “tough” decitions… and maybe the only way to stop their movement is by… make it imposible (cut LOCs)… even if they are our own bridges!.. then cut their bac kline to confine them … and then hammer then!
Mobile air defence will still be a problem… so use Jamming sorties to protect your package (in previous BfB it was posible… don´t know about this one in Stand Alone).
And of course, as usual… tune up the sliders regarding type of mission and targets… and even better, just make your own ATO fragging sorties instead of the AI doing it by itself… Time consuming… and you can screw it up as much as the AI HQ… but then nothing to complain about, right?
Good luck… Fry forces in BfB1.1.5 are Viral… each inch lost during the first hours may be lost forever… take your chances and play safe, and enjoy this awesome theatre done by FO!!
Keep it up!!!

As long as its just not me
Thanks Agalnov. My path is clear

Today I was beaten by SA-10 and MANPADs, though flyed at low altitude.((
It was a sweep-mission (I play stand alone campaign) and move my package to the patrol-area, at the north of the map, is something impossible.
AGM-45 is “not bad” weapon, but not against SA-10.
There is a main question for me! How to play campaign CORRECTLY (not just Balkans)? Shoud I plan every mission for a few hours and create every package manually? -
Generally I leave the AI HQ to handle the ATO. However, I do pick one squadron which I will fly and take it out of HQ control and frag my own missions based on how I see the need as the battle develops. I do adjust the target / mission slders and PAKs as well but I do not frag all the missions.
Note - Re: Balkans campaign. Don’t forget to take all the red F-16 squadrons out of HQ control.

Thanks, I’ll try to command my squadron without help of the AI HQ.
