Did something change in TE#3? Because when I first started practice I could call up air traffic control immediately, without dialing ATC comm freq. After getting better at landing - not quite there because I don’t flare good enough- the TE changed to where I have to dial in the comm freq before I can call ATC. Is dialing ATC supposed to be part of TE#3?

Unlikely the TE changed. More likely your default radio frequency changed. Check/reset your data cartridge so Kunsan Tower is on your default UHF channel and reload it in the jet.

OR …. push Com1 on the ICP and enter Kunsan Tower Freq 292.30, then push ‘Enter’ on the ICP.

I’d side with Agave on the data cartridge having changed from changing mission/airbase. I now make sure that the tower is freq. 1 for both UHF and VHF, used to use freq. 0 but it no longer loads.

Agave and Babite, you guys were right. My data cartridge was not set to the freq for Kunsan Air Base. So I opened the data cartridge in TE3 and set the UHF channel to 6, which corresponded to the number in the DED panel for UHF for TE3. I then clicked the Set Tower button and Kunsan Air Base replaced No Comment and the channel in the data cartridge automatically changed to 292.3, the Kunsan channel. I saved the change in the data cartridge and when I got in the air again, I could call the tower without having to dial in the comm freq.

            Your advice was much appreciated.

I’m guessing you also got the ILS to work too then, pressing 1 on the ICP for TCN/ILS, figuring out how to run the >highlighted< line to the correct location in the DED, inputing the frequencies for Kunsan : 110.3 ILS & 075X TACAN, switching to the ILS mode for the HUD, then following the command steering dot to align the cross, and following that to the tire screech touchdown. Has anybody made a good touchdown “feel” mod yet, so you can actually sence the bump when, say, the nose wheel finally impacts the runway, and not just a subwoofer under their chair?

The fun will increase when you go from visual + instruments to instruments only for the first time. I’ve botched a few landings in reality, luckily no broken bones. Mostly just broken levers and plastic on my bike, a twisted radiator once, and maybe a little memory loss included with a headache. Unfortunately I never got any video of any of them.

The only real annoying part in terms of simulation is the data cartridge, it’s so easy to forget if you don’t DRILL it into your routine every time. Then it becomes like breathing, you don’t need to think about it.

Good luck and remember to point the matte rubber part at the ground, not the painted airframe. But on a serious note: remember to enjoy the flying part.

                  Hey Babite,

You guessed way too much about my skills. I’m absolutely too dangerous right now for ILS/Instrument landings. I only got the ramp start memorized and am still practicing landings. I plan on going through all the TEs, and have been reading the docs. Anyway, I’ll take the good luck you sent me. I’m getting better at landings but with some of them, I really need good luck.

Flying a full approach plate from IAF to DH heads down between your knees watching the HSI/ADI/round dials is a treat when you look up and see the runway right before you. It gives you lots of confidence that you can come home after battle and descend through the pea soup and get back home to the bar.
