Radio communication
-
Hello,
I have a question. How is communication with other AI unit working? I am playing campaign for the first time. For ATC I have to set my UHF. That part is clear. But I have been communicating with AWACS and I did not set anything and I guess I can contact my wingman without setting radio too. In the briefing for the next sortie I have to escort some bombers. I have no freq for bombers flight but I have freq for AWACS for check in and so. So I am little confused. Clearly some part radio communication require set accurate freq. But some is automatic through the radio menu. If firt mission I have been using AWACS without any setting for my comm and in the second I have special freq for AWACS.
Could somebody enlighten me little? Thank you very much -
Unfortunately, communicating with escort(ed) AI isn’t possible. All you can contact is tower, AWACS and tanker, and for those, you don’t need really any specific frequencies if you use Channel 1-14 (default channels, I’m not entirely sure, but 15-20 may also work). As a result, you won’t be able to tell your escort to hurry up, or for your bomber to slow down or orbit for a while, and you’ll be on a precise time schedule, no matter the threat level…
The only time you really need to change and coordinate frequencies is when flying with human pilots, which I highly advise to do ASAP.

If you use any UHF/VHF frequency corresponding to default channels 1-4 you can at least monitor transmissions from your package.

and asking awacs location of “package” will tell you how far away they are

You had only 7 freq, if I recall correctly : 1 flight, 2&3 package 4 Proximity (anything in your team at 40 NM, no comment  ) 5 Guard 6 Broadcast and 7 Tower.
When you were on a channel, (for example : package) you could (and still can) hear any comms emited by the member of your package, even intra flight comms or call from your packages members to the tower, for ex.
For 7 Tower, you selected the airbase you were talking to via the TACAN channel (again, no comment).
This has been changed in the history of Falcon only slightly, by passing to a system of real frequency. But the underlining system is the same : when you input a preset frequency, you select one of these channels. Other frequencies are only useful for IVC in multiplayer. For tower comms, the airbase selection is not determined by a TACAN but by a frequency set in charts. Thats about it.
Improvements can be made, of course, but as always, these takes time and patience to undo what has been done before.

Thank you very much all of you for answers
