Haven’t been here in a while.

A friend of mine just got the oculus rift, and I’m wondering it would work with bms.

Yes, it can be used for BMS, You would need some software to Force Falcon onto the Oculus

No, I don’t believe it does.

The software needs to be made for Oculus, as opposed to it working in every game out of the box, as I understand it.

There is software to force any game to Oculus. I have heard, that for games without Oculus native display, menus, and UI is hard to display and navigate.

here is some feedback from oculus use with DCS - seems it has alot of potential, but its not quite there

                    So no AMD GPU.
                    Resolution is unplayable…
                    No multiplayer.
                    Can’t read gauges…
HUD is a mass of green.
U can’t see anything outside the pit.

Either the user didn’t set it up ok or this is a major blooper…

The vimeo video looks ok though the outside view is crap probably from recording camera?
Looks very impressing but HUD and all gauges text is unreadable.

Implementing full Oculus Rift compatibility is not trivial.
I got the first developer’s kit working (more or less) with BMS. You need a program to create the stereoscopic effect and then do the warping for the Rift lenses. I used IZ3D and Oculus Overlay. TriDef3D was doing both of these things for DK1 as of the last version, but they haven’t updated it for DK2. You’ll also need a way to translate the Rift’s head tracking into TrackIR. Facetracknoir could do this for the DK1, but I don’t know if they’ve updated it for the DK2. Then you need to tweak the stereo separation, convergence, and field of view to appear right. With DCS it works right out of the box, and apparently works quite well. I doubt we’ll be able to get such a level of compatibility in BMS.

well before u get in compatibility… can u read anything and use it as if u had a monitor or 3 monitors infront of u? From what I saw till now it’s a no-go for Flight sim as we fly it, unless u have it and u just want to take a walk in the park.

I think the DK2 could work fine with falcon4. The game used to be flyable at 640x480 so I dont see why it shouldnt be able to run on the dk2 which has 1920x1080 iirc.
DCS on the other hand was built for much higher resoutions and therefore has trouble with readability. Flying pure dogfighters such as the sabre or mustang is sheer joy on dk2.
                          IMO its the future.

Well it’s not 1920x1080 but actually half of 1920 thus 960x1080. Each eye sees the half of that 1920. Which makes it unplayable. U will not be able to read the pit instruments. They will have to double the resolution and I don’t see it coming any time soon.

The release version of Rift is supposed to have much higher resolution (readable text) and far better head tracking.

The Steam/HTC headset is also looking to be a good alternative too.
Either way, this is going to be an interesting year for flight sims (or any 3d game really.)

I had the change to try the Oculus Rift before a while, I must say it was an amazing experience, a game changer for sure. Head tracking was the smoothest and most accurate ever compared to TrackIR and EDtracker, while very light with good center of gravity. The total resolution although good for “simple” games etc I don’t think is 100% ready yet for the simulation world. Some small details in the graphics are not easily readable from normal head distance (eg within a 3d cockpit) and you’ll have to get closer to read these details, but the overall 3D immersion and world/object distances are stunning. Definitely the next years we will see amazing improvements.

Did you use the low res developer kits or the final consumer version?

Keeping in mind the consumer kits are still lowish resolution… even a 1080p monitor at a normal distance has a higher angular resolution.
