OK, so this is my p.141. Sorry but I do not see the text you refer to, also the ADI is not described here:
-
sorry for the confusion - can you post a picture to show the back up ADI please and the tick marks, that may throw more light on the issue.
-
Sure, and thanks for taking an interest. Here are two pictures from the Dash-1, pages 44 and 47:

Ok - the Back up ADI does have tick marks at BA10/20/30/60deg - the HUD has tick marks at 10/20/30/45 - the ADI has tick marks at 10/20/30 and for some reason unknown to me a “dot” at 45deg but only on the right hand side ??? Perhaps RD can shed some light on this …
good catch Jayb !!!

The more I have looked at the two ADI’s, the more I realize that they must be what you say, and what I initially asked Red Dog if he could verify: 10/20/30/45 for the ADI and 10/20/30/60 for the backup one. I was mistakenly thinking that they were 5,10,15 or something, for finer control of bank angle.

Also the HUD display, with the DED Data switch to “off” on the HUD panel, gives the same reading as the ADI 10,20,30,45. as shown on the previously mention page in the Nav hand book.
That’s said if you need to do a 60deg BA then the Back up ADI is, IMHO, better than using horizon sight picture through the HUD - mainly because you might not be able to see the horizon ;0)
So to summarise in normal flight I use the HUD for 10,20,30,45 deg of BA, if I need an accurate 60 deg BA I use the back up ADI, if the HUD is not functioning I use the ADI and if the jet is shot to sh#t and the ADI is not working, I use the back up ADI as that requires nothing from the jet its just a painted ball with a weight in one end floating about in some viscus liquid but it might save your life and at one time that’s all they had !!!
I suspect this is more information thank you were expecting but all information is useful …

Very true about the horizon being unavailable, you may be in a cloud, pitched up or something else. Not related to the F-16, the maneuvers required for approach and landing of the F-18 on a carrier also makes the ADI a goto tool.
