HUD symbology size remains constant, can it be changed?
-
Using TrackIR, I prefer to use the Z-axis control rather than FOV control (I don’t like the zoom in/out by moving my head, its so unrealistic and a real immersion killer for me), but the downside is the HUD symbology stays the same size irrespective of my “head” position. Here is three images to explain better what I mean…
Leaning toward the HUD
“Normal” seated position
Lying back away from the HUD
As you can see, the HUD symbology size doesn’t change to match the rest of the cockpit. It does when you use FOV control. Is there a config option I can change to make it correct?
TIA

This is perfectly correct.
… and BTW …

If you want realism … set you HUD back to green. White do not exist.

This is perfectly correct.
Could you explain why this is correct? As far as I know, the traditional HUD is a projection on a glass panel, and I I could accept it being blocked by other objects when viewed from certain angles, but I wouldn’t expect a projection to change in size and position by moving your head?

I use white cos it gives me the best contrast against a predominantly green terrain. Colour-blindness makes it necessary for me.

To me (even if it is unrealistic) is more convenient default HUD.
But if I want, I have very realistic HUD (30-degree wide view …etc. like in real) and also I don’t use. -
The reason the HUD symbols change size relative to the HUD equipment is the same reason why a distant mountain changes size relative to a hoop held up in front of your face. If you sit 12" or 24" from the hoop the mountain takes up a different fraction of the hoop because a change of a foot is a big change for distance to the hoop from your eye but not the mountain.
The same is true of HUD symbols. They aren’t located inside the cockpit where the glass is. The symbols are located 1000nm away just like the mountain. If you have a terrain feature corresponding to a symbol you will find that no matter how you move your eye point the symbol and the terrain feature will move together. This is because they are both very far away. HUD features like CCIP pipper or FPM require this behavior to work.
The reason FOV and head z-translation are different is because with FOV change all that is different is how much peripheral angle is squished onto the monitor. The location of the eye is not moved and so the relative size of the HUD glass to distant objects is the same. Z-translation actually moves the eye so you are moving closer and farther from the hoop.
I agree that using TrackIR for zoom/FOV sucks.

I use track ir Z axis for head in/out move (z axis)
And FOV set to one of my throtle wheel’s so i can use it like binos
Makes up crap resolution/flat monitor image. Makes hunting ground troops and tanks bit easier.

This is perfectly correct.
I agree.
@Malc
In short.- Your head to the left. HUD symbology follow the head.
- Your head to the right. HUD symbology follow the head.
-…… Up …
-… down …
The same is:
Your head moving forward. Symbology forward too. (You get the feeling that HUD is moving away, so becomes smaller.)
You move your head back. Symbology is getting bigger … Why?
To understand these issues, you need to understand the concepts of TFOV, IFOV.
TFOV -Total Field of View
IFOV - Instantaneous Field of ViewCockpit on your screen = TFOV
HUD symbology = IFOVMy two cents.

It all makes sense now, especially Frederf’s distant mountain analogy.
Still think FOV zoom in/out is X-box though, especially with TrackIR movement, my mind will never change on that!
but I do accept it has its uses from a concessionary point of view, a bit like white HUD symbology
Thanks to all for your input.

Dont worry Malc, Im much the same. Funny thing for me is that I will happily use the look closer button to zoom in, but refuse to use the FOV zoom on the TIR axis. I would rather like a setting to add binoculars over the screen when that button is used though, and perhaps the same when using NVGs. For now I just tell myself that its for using binoculars and use it as needed.

That would be a good idea - one level of zoom in a limited field of view as per a pair of binoculars.

The “ZOOM ON/OFF” callback. (“L” key)
-
yes, but as I said it would be nice to have a visual effect, like the tunnel vision effect around the binocular lens.

You mean like for NVGs?
-
Yes and no - id like the edges of the screen be occluded, be blocked from vision, for both NVGs and binoculars. Just a circle of vision in the center.

Okay. We have the same vision of the thing then

Wasn’t there a HUD mod that did this?

Edit: This:
https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7514No. It was just a question about the lens circle reflection … solved in the stock install since then.
