Help, I've hosed my Cougar setup!
-
Hi folks,
I’ve managed to hose my cougar setup which has been working fine for the last couple of years. It all started when i noticed that the stick’s front paddle switch did not activate the wheel brakes any more and that the microstick had stopped working.
I’m using t500RS pedals which have worked perfectly as rudder pedals thanks to the dual axis racing wheel pedals setting in the configurator.
I got the microstick working again and also the front paddle switch, but I cannot get the pedal axis assigned anymore. Here’s my current cougar setup:
Here’s my flight controls setup page:
I seem to recall something about having to use the toe brake axis for the microswitch, but I may be totally wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Never mind the right toebrake setting, it’s from previous unsuccessful experiments trying to get some axis reaction back.
All the best, Uwe

Hello Hoover
Have you tried removing each device and getting them working seperately?
I assume your pedals are USB?
I would uninstall the rudder pedals first and then unplug them. Get the Hotas working properly then reinstall the pedals ideally on a different USB socket than they were originally connected.
When you say ’ I seem to recall something about having to use the toe brake axis for the microswitch’ do you mean microstick? Indeed there are only 8 analog axes available in Cougar so if you have the microstick axes used then you cannot use pedals with toebrakes also activated (I mean gameport type pedals that plug into the Cougar stick base) via the Cougar Config utility - but if you have seperate pedals with toebrakes then you should be able to assign those toebrakes via the BMS controller setup screen like you showed in your second picture.
You would have previously assigned the paddle switch to the brake function on BMS keyboard keystrokes ‘k’ via the Keyfile in ‘Controllers’ part of BMS setup which is not an analog axis assignment -
Thanks for your reply, jetlag. My pedals are part of my simracing setup and they work fine in rfactor2 and other sims, they also worked fine in bms but somehow bms seems to have “forgotten” about them all of a sudden. I have no idea what happened as the setup has worked great for a couple of years, and I don’t recall any changes except for updating the t500 wheel drivers and firmware.
The config utility mentions that the “right toebrake” axis needs to be assigned to the rudder function. i’ve noted theres a “rudder” axis in the cougar setup utility, but I have a stock cougar HOTAS without any additional rudder pedals.
The following devices are connected atm:
- HOTAS cougar
- t500RS wheel & pedals (brake, clutch, throttle)
- g25 shifter via leo bodnar usb adapter
Somehow, the cursor X / cursor Y axes seem to have disappeared, too. They microstick moves fine in the viewer utility, though.
All the best, Uwe

Got it to work again with the following settings…
cougar:
flight controls:
Avionics:
I think the help text for the “enable virtual rudder” is highly misleading and should be formulated in a more helpful manner. I had to assign the “brake” and “right toebrake” to axes on my wheel / pedals, took me a while to figure this out.
Now off to some nice roundtrips around Crete
