MFD fonts

Good day everyone,
I was recently interested in seeing how you could change the MFD fonts. Through some explorer searching, I found out that fonts are in a separate folder of their own, which then I assume is used as needed in the game. Looking through it, I could see two types of files - the .gif files that detailed the fonts, and then the .rct files - which I assume is what the game uses as logic to place words correctly.
I may be absolutely wrong on this theory, though - and any explanation would be greatly appreciated - what does the .rct file do? How can we(if possible) manipulate it?

sscanf(str, “%d %d %d %d %d %d %d”, &idx, &left, ⊤, &width, &height, &lead, &trail);
just defines the position and size of each single character in the given .gif file
