When I click it I don’t hear the tower / UHF channel. But I still hear AWACS and wingmen.
Which is fine for single player I guess. Incorrect habits hurt only yourself there.
Setting the COMM1 MODE knob to GD tunes the main xmitter and receivers to the guard frequency of 243.000 MHz, and disables the guard receiver. It does nothing if the CNI knob is in BUP.
If you do this in multiplayer, any flight which has their UHF radio set to the default BOTH will hear all your radio calls over the guard frequency, through their guard receiver.
Like DeeJay says, you will probably find yourself with more enemies than you expected…

…. I don’t understand the difficulty “stuck” on Tower freq. Pretend it’s the TV and you don’t want to watch Telemundo anymore
But, what if there’s some really, really important message ATC has for your flight?
Like, “Vapor1-1 is there a problem? You’re disrupting traffic.”
“Vapor1-2 is there a problem? You’re disrupting traffic.”“Tower, Vapor1, we have an AC issue. We’ll be at the EOR an add’l 5 minutes.”
“Vapor1-1 is there a problem? You’re disrupting traffic.”
“Vapor1-2 is there a problem? You’re disrupting traffic.”" "

Ok … So basically … your advice is not good at all and ppl must not follow it (very bad advice in fact)
Learn that this button is to switch your UHF radio emitter to GUARD.
If you do this IRL or during MP session, you will pollute all comm’s and have suddenly more enemy than beforeSo what you are doing is not correct at all. Keep this knob on its normal position (as long you are not in emergency) and change your UHF frequency/channel on one of the Package Freq (see the BMS-Manual.pdf for freq list).
And when you say that you are hearing AWACS on GUARD, you are hearing only the emergency calls … not all what you are supposed to hear. (BTW, this is not correctly modeled ATM and maybe one day you will no more hear any threat broadcast on GUARD.)

Okay. Now I know. You learn something new every day.
You could have just said this right to begin with instead of acting like a cun* douche on your high horse -

Sorry about the high horse.
I’ve asked if you knew what this knob is made for because you could know it and using it like you do even by knowing that it wasn’t its dedicated function. Was mainly to avoid to “talk” for nothing. Seems you didn’t knew, so, I am glad you have learned something then. (do not hesitate to take a look to the Dash-1 and BMS-Manual.pdf located into your Doc folder … “all” (most) that kind of stuff are explained.)
