Solved 4.35: Need Help Getting Own Pilot Photo Working
-
(Apologies for posting this again – I can see the post under my Profile, but not listed at all in the actual Tech Support thread.)
I’ve followed both Dunc’s and RAM22’s pilot picture tutorials, but I just can’t get my photo into the sim.
Dunc’s: https://tinyurl.com/y3lupjn5
RAM22’s: https://tinyurl.com/y3dmr8g5Using F4Res Tool, I un-pack the pilots.idx, add the appropriately-sized (96 x 96 px.) image of my pilot to the other images in the un-packed folder, . . .
. . . add the reference to the image into the pilots.irc, . . .
. . . then re-pack the .idx.
I launch BMS, and find all of the photos are gone.
What’s more, I un-pack the just-edited .idx (just to confirm my additions actually took hold) and I find there aren’t any images in the folder, and the pilots.irc is completely blank!
(I’m able to restore the photos with the back-ups of the pilots.idx and pilots.rsc files.)

@Crassus Then let me elaborate…
What is unclear in the last sentence.

- but even that guide is archaic … maybe some stuff was changed in newer BMS … does manual for 4.36 have something about this???
So…
From what I understand you want your picture instead hundreds pics of Joe Pilots already in sim… and You’re NOT building your own theater?? , so this edit what you’re trying to do would be maybe kinda essential-
Forget about what @51thPolux and I said above , not relevant anymore.
-
FORGET about that ARCHAIC guide you have found in the deep history of bms-forum.
-
Read NEW 4.36 manual - “HOW TO IMPORT PILOT PICTURE”
Good luck
-
@Crassus maybee, use notepad++
-
@Crassus Or just name him: GHOST1
Jokes aside, yes it could be what @51thPolux said, falcon files are still? linux based so there’s no CR/LF … only LF
(Windows) Notepad can save UTF , but widows only knows CR/LF.NPP++ is best bet. - but even that guide is archaic … maybe some stuff was changed in newer BMS … does manual for 4.36 have something about this???

@white_fang: I’m sorry, but is there a reply missing? You reference “what @51thPolux said”, but I don’t see any other reply from him other than to try Notepad++.
I’m not sure what you mean by CR/LF – please elaborate?

@white_fang Hi!
This isn’t Solved.
No joy after following the instructions in the 4.36 User Manual, page 191:
I put the my pics into \user\Pictures, per the Manual, and neither image is listed.
On a whim though, I put my pilot photos into the \User\Patches folder, and lo and behold, they show up – sort of:
I’ll chalk up the bad image to my editing (I used Photopea . . . .).
-
@Crassus Nope… sorry,. It is not BMS problem , but rather Graphical tools we have at our disposal. I’ve even tried with photoshop , and it failed …
It is something about TGA compatibility … still looking , why … maybe need OLD TARGA for DOS format … will report.I’ve extracted original pictures , eve 24bpp can do , so not 8/16bpp limited , but need upside-down and OLD TARGA FORMAT.
So NOT BMS PROBLEM
And you’re not correct, I’ve put images in /Pictures directory and BMS found them , you just need to look better when scrolling for your image.
But , obviously … even /Patches will do …So, yes it IS SOLVED… you’ll just need to find which tool can use save that old targa format … keep looking … it is an archaic format from dos ,…
-
@Crassus Hey , got it working!!!
Used photoshop and save-as TARGA , 16bpp , no-rle-compresion
Even no need to upside-down the pic… must be 96x96 pixels. My photo showed in /Pictures directory just fine., in BMS.
So try like that … should be no problem,
Cheers

Not sure what’s going on, but I was able to get a custom photo to show up in my Logbook.
Putting the image in the \User\Patches folder, it shows up as a patch; but I could never get it to show after putting it into \User\Pilots.
So for anyone else who’s had trouble getting a pilot photo into the logbook: your mileage may vary.
-
I resize the .png to 96 x 96 px, and flip it both vertically and horizontally.
-
Using Easy2Convert PNG to TGA, I was able to convert the .png to a .tga with the correct settings: 16 Bits Per Pixel; no compression.
-
Thinking since I was finally able to save the pic as a .tga with the right settings, I tried again using Khroniks F4ResTool. I un-pack the pilots.idx, add my photo to the folder, add the photo file name to pilots.irc.
-
Before re-packing pilots.idx, I delete both the original pilots.idx and pilots.rsc files from the \Data\Art\Resource folder. Re-packing will replace those files.
-
In \Data\Art\Pilots, open up imageids.id and append the picture’s file name and use the next number in the sequence, e.g. the original images were numbered 6000 to 60110. I added “TIKTAK_01 60111”.
-
Fire up BMS, and

NO MATE!!! … in /User/Pictures !!! - read that section of manual CAREFULLY this time
That was your mistake… but anyway … you got it working… Yes it must work both ways, original - repack into .idx/.rsc , or just put your image in Pictures
I’ve saved my photo first time with Xnview, but got exactly what you had … noise image … probably wrong bpp setting, then I fiddled once more in photoshop and got the result … how f**** hard importing picture can be???
! NOT every graphical software respects format standardization - but photoshop MUST HAVE … so there should be no problem …BMS offers that possibility to place your image in /Pictures EXACTLY why you don’t have to fiddle with “resource” files re-packing … for the average joe user … as idx/rsc files are somewhat complicated and NOT user friendly , internal resource, somewhat “modding” style , get me?
But anyway … you did it - hard way , congrats
Cheers
