Air to Air refuelling training mission TACAN issue
-
Hello,
My apologies if this is a misunderstanding on my behalf but I am getting an odd behaviour when using the air to air TACAN during the air to air refuelling training mission.
When intercepting the KC135 the TACAN behaves as described in the Training Manual, distance is displayed and the bearing needle spins to signify no directional information.
When intercepting the KC10 the TACAN shows a distance of around 130nm even though I’m close enough to see the tanker. The needle also spins instead of pointing at the tanker.I have checked the correct channel, band and A/A is displayed on the DED, I also have TCN set on the EHSI. Am I missing something else?
-
Sorry but I have to pull up the RTFM…
-34 manual covers that…
-
Don’t be sorry, I just need to figure out what Im missing.
Ive now read the TACAN section of the-34 including the air to air modelling and I see I need to +/- 63 to the channel to get it to work so 29Y becomes 92Y unfortunately I’m still getting the same result with the KC-10.
Any other recommendations?

You figured it out. KC-10 gives distance and bearing. If you’re too far from the tanker, if only gives distance.
In the training mission, when starting with the F16 flight near Camel 1 (KC-10), the AWACS directs you at Camel 1, with correct bearing and distance, and TACAN 29Y.
Setting AA TACAN to 29Y will result in unappropriate distance (as you said). It directs at something that is not this tanker. Bearing is not relevant anymore (even if it’s another KC-10)
Setting AA TACAN to 92Y gives no result.I suspect there is a problem with the training mission, if not 36.0, on that matter. I didn’t test further. You’re right, this is not normal.

Please note that the A-A TACAN in this mission is bugged. Two tanker has the same frequency. Is fixed in U1
-
The KC-10 is the one that is supposed to have both in the docs unless that has been changed.
I tried it in the AAR mission and you get neither on those channels regardless of how close you are to the KC-10 as the OP states.

There we go.

@Micro_440th
One more AA tacan thing , easy to repro,
AA tacan on tankers change in ~1 min after scenario/te, start.Made TE for ‘basket case’ practice , 5 tankers , all types.
When scenario loaded eg. IL78 had TCN92 , but when I was in 3D none of the tankers matched original tacan entries, from the scenario start.Loaded scenario again and watched closely … in about 1 min , all tankers AA tacan rotated. None was what was originally when entered scenario.
I can live with this, make scen run a little rather then start right away, then mark what AA tacans are used…
Just want to know this is if think is broken or something not right.

Please send this mission. Can you confirm this is reproducible any time when you start this mission?

@Micro_440th … yup… perfectly can repro everytime, … that is why I noticed it …
But!.. it is a Balkans scen … for what is worth… BUT!.. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter … I don’t mind trying the same in KTO … no big deal.

@Micro_440th Done the KTO test… you asked for it
Ok, not the same behavior , but YES , 2 tankers swapped their AA tacans … around T+28min (maybe before, but I left in running in background) in 2d map, a bit later then in Balkans, …
this is at start of the TE (Kto)
kto kc10 92y kc130 126y kc135e 125y kc135r 124y kdc10 123y il78 122y
Later , Kdc10 and IL78 swapped their 123<>122 , others remained unchanged.
So something is there… … in that Balkans test change is more drastic , all tankers change their tacan
Now, could be the plane, AA tacan, … in Balkans test IL78 is first tanker , so if he changes , all of them change … and I don’t have KDC10 in Balkans test … suspect = IL78 >?>Cheers

Ok so it seems that tankers may change TACAN while in theater.
Will AWACS always give the proper tanker TACAN when asked for Vector-to-Tanker (QQ4), even after it was changed ?
-
Just played the mission in 4.36 U3. The TACAN works as intended for a few minutes and then stops. Not sure if the tankers are swapping TACAN’s but I can’t find them on other channels.
-
@Mack_F4 There is definitely an issue (bug?) with TACANs changing. Probably not just with this mission but overall.
I flew this mission yesterday and I wrote down the UHF frequencies and the TACAN channels in the 2D UI (“map room”) before committing to 3D. Once airborne those TACANs were not correct anymore.
In 3D AWACS could state the working TACANs so no big deal in this mission, but something is going on.
-
After the TACAN stopped working I recontacted AWACS and requested vectors to the tanker, the TACAN frequency given was the same I already had tuned so if its changing it doesn’t appear to catch the change.
