Assigning Tankers
-
Good Day, All. I would appreciate the Groups input on something. Recent developments in the tankers available has sparked new interest in AAR. However, I’m having trouble matching a flight to a particular tanker.
I have human controlled VFA squadron and a human controlled “VFK” squadron. I have tried making a package containing both VFA/VFK. I have tried creating separate tanker flights at the appropriate place and station time.
Unfortunately, BMS wants to assign me to the tanker flight(s) created “by HQ”, or so it seems. So, I can literally be right behind my desired tanker and AWACS wants to vector me to “the other guy”. And, when I push button 13 the tanker usually says “unable”. I don’t have this trouble in TE’s, just campaigns
Any tips would be appreciated -
@drtbkj
Good… morning, day or anything else is there at your place now, dear Fra’.
This should be a (still) unsolved issue in Falcon coming from ages, IIRC… I have to seek once again in all those past topics posted, but, to be realistic, keeping well in mind that there is no way to get it even, though.I will keep you informed, in case.
Good luck with this one and with best regards.

Firstly, thx Gianni. Lorik, the jets are the F-18C and the new “KF-18”.

I’m wondering if the key question is how BMS “frags” the tankers. I created a training mission, and the campaign has “auto fragged” 2 separate tanker flights
As you can see. How does BMS "assign me to one or the other?. In this case, it assigns tanker 2 to my flight. I wondering what would happen if I deleted all tanker flights then added my desired tanker?

@drtbkj Not an expert by any means, but I always had the understanding that tankers were not part of particular flight. Rather, they act as support for any flight in the theater. So as long as you know the tankers frequency you can connect, regardless of how they were fragged. As long as they are on station, of course.
If you open up the ATO for one of the prebuilt TEs, eg. Long Travel, the tanker is under Support and not “connected” to the deep strike package. But still available for refueling:

Thanks, Jayb. That is indeed something worth considering. In the example above I did have 2 tanker freqs. I’ll try the tanker I’m not assigned in Briefing.
Meanwhile, when I deleted the other tanker flights, “my” tankers showed up in Brief, which I suppose is logical -
I think I see what you mean now.
By “assign”, you mean that you have that tanker given to you as UHF preset 13?
So with two tankers on station in the ATO, how does BMS decide which one to give you?
That’s a good question - if you have a refueling steerpoint it could be the one with its track closest to that, although that is just guesswork.
I always keep a list of all tanker frequencies and a bullseye for their track, the presets are not exhaustive for tankers.
Interesting stuff, hopefully someone will shed some light

@jayb The assignment to UHF 13 is exactly the point. Realistically you want more then just my tankers in-theater, but how to do that is the question
