Aim-120 r-aero, r-opt .. but what about the pk ?
-
Hi all,
I only fly falcon in solo for many years now (like a lot of you : rp patch, sp1,…free falcon, allied, BMS
) and I am not the best simmer for sure but :
I wonder what is the utility to have such distances on the DLZ for aim-120 because i have never scored a kill at r-aero launch and i think never in r-opt even lofting and going full AB.
So, has one of you had any success at these distances with amraam ?
For me, only between r-pi and r-tr I start to have some kills.
Is there something that i am doing wrong ?
Thanks.

@ericfa2a I presume it’s for large, non-maneuvering targets … like bombers … or cruise-missiles or drones.
Not for a fighter with any kind of RWR.

@ericfa2a IIRC the Training manual explains these in a really simple way for the BVR TE. After that the Dash-34 goes into a bit more detail on the A-A chapter.
You can get kills at any range theoretically, but you won’t have any success 99% of the time at all ranges.
Raero is just the max range of the missile and if the bandit was a static object or an aircraft moving straight towards you/the missile, it would get hit. But that won’t ever happen, or it will very rarely happen with slow moving aircraft or aircraft that can’t get notified about the launch, as airtex said.
Ropt is pretty much the same but the Pk is higher. I don’t know how much higher and I don’t think it’s explained anywhere since it depends on many variables.
Personally, I’d say that the range between Ropt and Rpi should be used when you want to force the bandit to go defensive, either to stop him from coming any closer to your airspace or to get some time to turn tail and RTB if you can’t risk getting any deeper into their airspace or getting into a fight with them.

@airtex2019 @unkindled Thank you for yours replies.
So we are ok there is no utility to fire in r-aero or r-opt range for potential kills in BMS KTO campaigns :).
The only goal that i understand is in effect to make the bandits going defensive and to get some distance to RTB or return in your own protected airspace.
