Foxy issue 'Flash upgrade / Update firmware
-
Gents,
Since 15 years or so I have a 100% working Thrustmaster Cougar. I had to reinstall the Cougar drivers (other system) and last but least… Flash/Upgrade the firmware in the Cougar with Foxy, but when I give this commmand in Foxy nothing happens. Not any confirmation message is shown, just the Foxy window and that’s it.
BTW; I know how to install the Cougar (drivers and so on), 'cause I did this many times before, but this issue is new to me.
Any help to solve this is very welcome and thanks for your advise and help in advance.

@Nick-san I have a Cougar setup myself and I sem to recall that you must clear the existing firmware first. Note. Unplug your TQS first before you proceed. There was a reported issue with frying the throttle pot during the flash. Note that there is no more recent firmware as far as I know.

@DaveB Thank you for your advise :-), Yes, I started from scrach and here the sequence:
Step 1:
- Uninstall Foxy
- Delete the HOTAS folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\HOTAS)
- Unplug the Cougar
- Clean (and save) the Register
Step 2:
- Install the drivers with 2007_HCO_VISTA_64_RC1 (compatible with Vista pack 2)
- Plugin the Cougar when prompted (during the install of the drivers)
- Clear the firmware (but there isn’t any in the Cougar yet, as it is a new install)
- Then the command in Foxy to install the firmware, but… then nothing happens. Ususally a window pops-up after the firmware/flash update that tells you that the firmware is send to the Cougar, but now this window is not shown
Ok, work still in progress. I keep you posted when I solved the issue

Hi, just a comment: Disable the energy power managment for USB.

@Trueno Thanks for your advise. I disabled the energy power managment for USB, no luck so far, but… see the next post

Problem solved!
After done everything possible (change BIOS USB settings, other USB-ports and so on) and install/reinstall the drivers dozens of times, the Cougar still wasn’t found by the OS (Win 10).
I decided to remove the bottom (Side stick), remove the PCB there and took off the connectors en plug them in again and…
Finally the Cougar is recognized by the OS and the firmware now is loaded into the Cougar.
Not sure this was the way to solve the issue, but it seems to work and I’m happy again.
Thank you for your advices, appreciated

great to know that…!!! Meaby a ground connection problem. I had a similiar problem but in my case was the USB energy save. See you in the sky

@Nick-san Gidday Guys,
My old Cougar is with a mate who has W11. Before I sent stick to him I installed BMS on a spare W10 PC and it was recognised, calibrated in Windows etc and worked in the sim. I boxed it up, sent it off and we are now having some issues with it in his pc.
In desperation I guided him through a reflash of firmware with no joy. In this post I see there is a 2007 version of the HCO drivers and I think that is where I made the mistake of trying to use the 3 HCO 2004 drivers.
So having done a fair bit of thread reading here would this sound like a plan:
This is what I have written to send to him:
I am pretty sure this is just an issue with the drivers under W11. Can I suggest we clean it all out, find and install the 64bit drivers, then install Foxy
Step by step:
-
Unplug throttle from Cougar and the Cougar from USB port in PC.
-
Use Program Manager to uninstall any application we had put in: Foxy and Target. The CCP app will disappear when the 3 HCO 2004 driver is ditched in the next step.
-
Get this: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html and run it.
This will enumerate the USB devices currently connected, any installed drivers and using it we can ditch the older unwanted drivers. Use this application to say bye-byes to the the 3 HCO 2004 drivers.
REBOOT
-
Get the 2007 HCO drivers and install them. They are last ones at bottom of page.
https://support.thrustmaster.com/en/product/hotascougar-en/ -
Run USBDevView and check they are installed. Same USBDevView app from step 3.
REBOOT
-
Plug Cougar in - without holding Trigger and check it is recognised in Windows using the Windows USB Game Controller app. I wouldn’t calibrate it in Windows at this stage as we just want to see the stick move the cross and the buttons light up.
-
Run the CCP (Cougar Control Panel) that comes with the 2007 HCO software. It should be the blue icon on your desktop.
-
As we deleted the Firmware we’ll need to reinstall that. This is done from Foxy which we will also reinstall from the installer we downloaded yesterday.
Before we reflash the Cougar using Foxy:
REBOOT and perhaps burn a stick of incense or two, sacrifice a lamb and drown yourself in a bucket of Holy water
-
Install Foxy.
-
Hold Trigger in and plug Cougar into USB 1 or 2 port (white or blue)
-
Reflash Cougar Firmware using Foxy

Problem solved using Vista 64 bit drivers 2007 HCO from TM support driver download to install Cougar in W11
The stick is sweet apart from a small challenge with Throttle microstick.
It seems to detect the Cursor X as a 0-64000 range (like a rotary) rather than stay at halfway and move cursor L and R from centre position. Testing jet shows I t constantly drives TDC to LHS of RADAR display in MFD.
I will start another thread with a small video tomorrow. Any help gratefully received.
Cheers,
Zap
