Serieus issue with AI in strikes (in 2D world or outside bubble)
-
In 4.36 I’ve noted that AI flights in 2D world (or in-game but outside the bubble) very often failed to strike their objectives. Now with 4.37 I’ve done some testing.
Setup:
- Simple TE with no opposition
- Skill level set to max for all
- OCA strike package consisting of four 4-ship F-16’s all with JDAM and LGB’s (mix of AP and HE)
- Target is an undefended airbase (no red air and ground units)
Then run the scenario in 2D world and observe.
Result:
- Only one item of the objective list gets destroyed (in this case a single RWY section).
I’ve repeated this test numerous times and changed various parameters but the outcome remains the same:
It doesn’t matter if it’s a TE or campaign, it doesn’t matter what the target is, it doesn’t matter what aircraft type is in the package, it doesn’t matter what weapons they have, it doesn’t matter if you assign targets to every aircraft, it doesn’t matter how big the strike package is, it doesn’t matter if you have excellent scores in campaign flights, it doens’t matter if time compression is used and it doesn’t matter if you observe in 2D or when you are in 3D world and the strike package is outside the bubble. In previous versions of BMS (4.35 and before) strike packages where much more effective in a scenario as described above.
To me it seems like this is a bug and if so I hope it will be solved soon. If not please let me know what I can do myself to change this. -
Can you qualify failed?
I don’t trust the Falcon success or failed result…
What I want to know is if the airfield can be used by ennemi…So is the airfield 0% operational? In this case, that’s enough…
PS: This is not a “serious” issue… Let us decide that
-
Failed as in my own definition, not BMS result (I also don’t care much about Falcon’s judgement about that ). If 16 airplanes and 32 bombs are sent to an undefended airbase and only one RWY section is destroyed and it remains 50% operational I don’t find that a succesful mission.
Furthermore this has a huge impact on campaigns as airbases are repaired much quicker and it applies to all strikes to all targets and so has a big impact on campaign progress. To me this is a serious issue.

I hear you but again…
You barely scratched the surface of campaigns…
OCA are not obvious choices… You need to take into account striking factories, etc…
Supplies and prodcution first… Airbases when necessary.
Again not a serious issue…
Cheers

Well, regardless of whether this is considered serious or not for winning the campaign: it’s true, AI tends to dump all munitions at once (in 3d) at one target (both 3d and 2d). This happens in other missions as well, not just OCA.
-
@depapier that is a known issue and not related to this thread…
Please try not to mix topics
-
@MaxWaldorf which one is the known issue? I’d love to know which you mean. The AI dumping everything at once? AI package striking only one target in 3d? AI package striking only one target in 2d?
-
@depapier AI dumping all at once and sometimes far from target.
-
@patreus I confirm this. I had no other choice but to completely disable all strikes and OCA at the beginning of the campaign due to high losses and almost zero effect on targets. Even if you fly a deep strike with the AI, there is a high chance that their targets will end up outside of the 3D bubble.
OTOH ground units and AAD are destroyed as effectively as in 4.35. I think the problem might be related to target assignment which was added in 4.36.
-
Huh, but then its just a small issue of not having more than one target automatically set per package? Then the player could always edit the ai OCA package to assign targets? Will test
-
@depapier no, it won’t help. Tried several times, mostly it was one target per flight or package (usually this target is automatically assigned). In only rare cases could AI flights destroy more than one target, especially in the absence of AD or air threats.
Perhaps this is not a bug, but rather an encouragement for the player to fly more OCAs and strategic strikes, rather than relying on AI.

This doesn’t make any sense. You first go after airbases, then everything else. Something with air superiority you know. Like I mentioned, it applies to all targets, not just airbases so it has a big influence on campaign progress. Please run a campagin or TE in 2D and observe what happens when AI strikes undefended targets.
Noticed this already in 4.36 so likely something to do with the target assignment which was introduced then. -
