Unsolved Maddog : Inflight behavior & Dash34 discrepancy
-
Hello !
I have a question regarding Maddog mode.
In 4.35 & 4.36, Maddog is activated with three conditions :
- Missile in Bore Mode (EITHER setup on SMS page to switch between Slave & Bore OR by pressing “Cursor Enable” to switch from Slave default mode to Bore mode)
- Push “uncage Button” (and then pops “ready” message on SMS page
- Push “Weapon Release” - which is obvious…sorry
Then the missile is lauched and active.
If launched in slaved mode, then the missile behaves as a dumb rocket and never becomes active.Inflight behavior and BMS manual are aligned.
In 4.37 :
- Dash 34 says “When fired in bored mode, the ARH will fly to a virtual target estimated in front on its own position, enters into MPRF search immediately after launch and will seek for a target within its seeker range, azimuth and elevation. This can be either friendly aircraft or enemy. Thus the brevity term “Maddog”. The selection of target will be the first one it will find this will not be necessarily the closest”
- Dahs 34 says : “SLAV mode without a bugged target: A missile can also be fired in SLAV without a bugged target, by a long simultaneous press of UNCAGE and Pickle. The missile is then fired without a target and will not activate its seeker. This mode is essentially a missile jettison. BORE mode: BORE allows you to fire a missile relying solely on the missile seeker to find a target. In BORE launch, the missile seeker goes active directly after launch and targets the first aircraft it ‘sees’. This mode should only be used for self-defence with extreme caution, as the missile seeker will not discriminate friend or foe (the brevity for such a launch is MADDOG for good
reason). In BORE mode, missile fire is done by a simultaneous long press of UNCAGE and Pickle. In BORE mode, the missile will ignore any bugged target on the FCR.
NOTE: This mode is well suited in dogfights when a Sidewinder (or other AA IR missile) is not an option” - Changelog says : "Fixed maddog behavior
- Go active of the rail with and w/o fcr track
- Limit maddog LOS to seeker cone, not gimbal limits
- Fly straight without target, turn of seeker and self destruct"
- Infllight, could the missile be in Bore or slaved mode, once fired as Maddog, he becomes active (in compliance with the changelog)
My question is simple : as the Bore mode is not anymore a condition for a missile to become active, do we have to consider that Maddog only requires a push on “Uncage” + “Weapon release” ? And furthermore that there is no way to jettison an AIM-120 anymore ?
And last but not least : in my humble understanding of the former behavior (4.35/4.36), the fact that a pilot had to select “Bore” mode was a a kinf of guardrail to avoid a missile lauch when pushing accidentally “Uncage” + “Wpn release”. Now, with the 4.37 behavior, it looks easier to let this error occur. It sounds a liitle weird to me (with no XP of military operation of any kind) that the system allows such an error to occur. I have in mind the testimony from Rosenkranz in Viper in the Storm where the author references to another pilot that lauched twice his Sidewinder during two different flights due to the high level of stress during the mission.
Thanks for your help,
Best,

@Hawk To launch w/o fcr track in slave or bore you need to hold uncage, the missile will go active right away. To break track when in slave press cursor enable

@Tumbler31 I just repro’d … uncage+pickle in SLAV mode, with radar completely off => pilot calls out “mad dog” and the seeker did track target.
Is there no way to “jettison” aim120 now?
(Is this a doc-bug or a code-bug?)

I’m not aware of any method to jettison A-A ordnance

a doc bug

@Tumbler31 Thanx for the reply. Crystal clear.
