TACAN to alternate.

Hello forum, happy Saint Patrick’s day from Ireland.
As an exercise to check out my ability to change tower frequency in flight I lifted off from Seosan using tactical engagement #2 “Take off”. I flew a course of 020 toward Seoul and using Com 1 entered 237.1 on UHF. When close enough, Seoul ATC responded and vectored me into a nice landing. I’m a happy novice pilot this morning!
My question….before leaving Seosan I input all the TACAN date for Seoul into the system ie 046X in backup, 110.9 and 190 in the DED and 190 in the HSI. On approach I turned on TACAN. While, as I’ve said, the ATC responded, the Seoul TACAN did not. It continued to point to Seosan until outside it’s 50 mile range.
Does the sim not support an in flight alternate TACAN or (more likely) am I forgetting something?
Thank you.

I don’t think the backup will do unless you disable the UFC stuff first.
Just enter the TACAN frequency using
ICP -> 1
and you should be all set.
Cheers, Uwe

you must not use backup as explained in the original F4 manual as the backup system is not the primary way to change tacan frequencies
You should do it with the UFC via the T-ILS page => that is active when the system is in CNI
In backup (AUX COM panel, CNI switch in backup) then your aux comm panel sets the tacanthis is another example wht the original manuals shouldn’t be used anymore
the dash 1 and the chart tutorial in the doc folder of current bms explains how it works in current BMS -
The Backup TACAN on your left is just that, a backup. If you have the Up-Front Control (UFC) up and running, those are primary, and you have to select the TACAN there.
1. Press ICP-1 T-ILS (T standing for TACAN)
2. Type in the TACAN channel on your ICP
3. Press ICP-ENTER
4. (Optional) Change the X/Y band by pressing ICP-0 and then ICP-ENTER.
5. (Optional) Change T/R to A/A by flicking the “4 point switch” to the right (SEQ).Step 4 and 5 are used if you want an Air-to-Air TACAN with other aircraft, e.g. tanker or flight lead.

Or see BMS432_dash1.pdf in your BMS/Docs folder page 17 section 1.2.1.5 AUX COMM panel and page 60&61 sections 1.3.4 CNI page & T-ILS page

Thank you all for your help. When I mentioned using the backup, I only enter the TACAN there in case I need to use it should the UFC become damaged. I leave the back up in the “off” position. Sorry about that, I should have clarified it.
Thanks again, I’ll try again. If I have further difficulties I’ll get back to you, if I may.
Regards
Bayonet.

Hello Eagle Eye, may I pick your brain again please. While flying from Seosan to Seoul, my TACAN is now operating correctly. However, the ILS does not activate properly. When within range I switch to TACAN/ILS. the cross lines appear, broken and fixed. They do not lead the way to the airfield.
My settings are as follows…TCN. T/R. ILS ON. Channel 46. Band. X. Frequency 110.90 Course 190. The UHF frequency is 237.10. Is the Command Steering important?
Frustrating isn’t it, thanks for your help,

Where are you when you activate ILS?
Ils are very narrow and have a max range in BMS of 18 Nm if I remember right or was it 20?if you are on the opposite end of the runway, the ADI will display the ILS flags until you come closer to the glidesope and localizer cone
If you come from Seosan, direct to Seoul, you approach Seoul from the South West something.
Since the ILS is on the northern side of Seoul (RWY 19) then it’s normal you don’t get ILS signal until you go North of Seoul and align yourself with the ILS coneMaybe try flying the Seoul approach chart to get there?

Not sure if it’s helpful for the OP, but maybe someone who runs across this thread in the future ….
Below are two really good videos for anyone not familiar with ILS/TACAN functionality or using Red Dog’s charts in BMS:
-
Thank you both.
Red Dog, I think the southerly approach may be the problem. I’ll try the northerly route to see if that lights up the ILS.
Agave Blue, I’m familiar with both videos. I’ve watched the first one many times, but have shied away from the latter as it appeared too complicated. However, as I get need to be proficient in instrument flying and Nav before I start bombing things, I’ll study it in more depth. Thanks again.

Thanks again.Bombing things can be fun after a long tiring session of trying to wrap (or warp ;)) your head around approach & departure charts and some of the more esoteric TACAN stuff, so I usually combine my TACAN training session with a trip to the Assimi range on Crete (Aegean V1.3) to blow up some stuff there just for fun before it’s back to Kasteli for yet another fscked up IFR approach
Cheers, Uwe

Haha, this is exactly what it seemed “bother” Uwe
Next time i have in my mind to make things more easier…

No worries Nikos, it’s definitely my problem and not a general problem with your excellent charts.
Tacan approach ine poly viskolo
