      Hi folks,

I’m getting this noise when a SAM radar apparently locks me up:

      https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1983539/bms/debug/weird_sam_noise.mp3

Has anybody else heard this sound, and if so, what does it mean?

It’s not related to other fighters or something, I created a plain, SAM only TE to test this and the noise was there once the SA-10 radar went red in the HAD (Aegean 1.3)

      Thanks in advance,

      Uwe

SA-10 ‘Grumble’. It is common when being lockedup by the Grumble. There are also ship born versions.

        See in Falcon
Tactical Reference –> Vehicles --> Air Defense --> SA-10 Grumble (Click on the RWR tone button to the right of the screen)

Thanks, so is it supposed to sound like this? At first I thought it was an audio bug 😉

I don’t think so. I can hear the SA-10 RWR tone there but its not what you would normally hear, something is wrong.

Unless its just a very noisy cockpit. And you have your RWR volume down low.

How did you record the sound the static/noise seems to fade in and then out.

In fact, In BMS it is rather all other sounds that are “wrong” and only SA-10 “sounds real”.

IRL, this RWR is “playing” the real music of the radar waveform … and except when the sound produced is clamped, what you hear is the roughly the PRI of the radar which is painting you.

In other words … IRL, RWR sounds (ALR69/93) are not pre-defined synthetic tones like in Falcon4.

I used my mobile phone and then processed the sound in audacity to cut out the non-relevant sections. For good measure I faded the sample in and out as to not blast your speakers when you play it 😉

I was slightly inside the threat circle of the SA-10 when I heard the noice only once as the “10” simple in the HAD when from yellow to a red block. About a minute later –- boom! No launch warning, no wingie calling out, nothing. I guess that’s realistic too…

                  All the best, Uwe

Yep that was the only warning you get, then your dead.

Turn and run or get below/behind a hill, don’t ignore it. Unless your playing cat and mouse for a buddy.

                    Have fun.

thanks Shadow! Up to now I never knew what this noise meant, I thought it was a garbled text message of some sorts… I’ll keep this in mind in the future. 😉

                        All the best,

Every time I hear that tone I put my hands down to the ejection seat handle while swearing around.
My girlfriend is amused because normally I’m only swearing after a loud boooom.

                          btw, check my sig^^

Weird thing is that in my Karpathos TE, I’ve been hearing this noise for minutes on end without anything ever happening to me. But I guess it goes to explain many of the weird “engaged defensive” callouts my AI wingies were emitting 😉

I’ve been hearing it in my install a lot while airborn but I’m only being viewed, not shot at when I hear it. IIRC I hear it when I’m within the 10’s radar range but it doesn’t open up on me - then again I’m usually running a TE mission when I’m in the seat.
