1.2.2.1 ALT GEAR HANDLE
This handle is used to extend the landing gear when normal extension is not possible (in case of hydraulic failure due to engine flameout or after a gear handle solenoid fail implemented in 4.35 for instance). Pulling the handle provides enough pneumatic pressure to open the gear doors and extend the nose landing gear. The main landing gear will drop quickly by airflow and gravity and locks in place thanks to actuator locks. The nose wheel is opening against the airflow and needs to be pushed against the airstream. Although alternate gear extension may be initiated up to 300Kts, the nose wheel may lock into position only under 190Kts due to the insufficient force required for higher airflow. Please note you can lower the gear with the alternate handle only once as the lost pneumatic pressure cannot be recharged in flight.
The ALT GEAR RESET button (black button (normally white) in the centre of the handle) allows retraction of the landing gear after an alternate extension if hydraulic pressure system B is available. Mouse hotspot is a bit difficult on this one as both the handle and the reset button share the same hotspot but are differentiated with the left or right mouse click. Left click is the handle and right click is the reset push button. In the heat of the moment it is not intuitive to remember which is which unfortunately.1.2.2.6 Gear panel
The landing gear (LG) and its doors are operated by hydraulic system B. It has two main gears (MLG) and one nosewheel (NLG).
The gear handle commands LG retraction or extension. In real aircraft the handle is locked in the up position to prevent inadvertent lowering of the gear. To lower the gear the pilot has to depress the white pushbutton located on the landing gear handle. This would not be practical to implement but BMS consider that the permission button is always depressed when lowering the handle.
A red warning light in the top of the handle (lollipop) illuminates when the LG and doors are in transit or have failed to lock in position. The light also comes on below 10000 feet when all LG are not down and locked, airspeed is less than 190 knots and rate of descent is greater than 250 feet per minute or when there is mismatch in the landing configuration.
The DN LOCK REL button, which is implemented in 4.35 is a mechanical bypass of the landing gear handle solenoid. The solenoid prevents the handle to be moved inadvertently but may fail. The mechanical bypass is then used to move the handle. Please note, these two actions do not have to happen simultaneously. A Sim delay was introduced to allow the pilot to perform both actions subsequently rather than simultaneously for obvious mouse and keystroke issues the real pilots (or cockpit builders) don’t have to take into account. On the ground, once WOW is activated, the landing gear cannot be retracted unless this safety button is depressed. In the air, this button allows lowering the handle in case of a solenoid failure.
