      Hello,

Below is what the manual says on how to use “Lines” for mission planning but it still raises some questions.

“Each LINE series contains up to 5 steer points that can be used to define a forward edge of battle area (FEBA)/Forward line of troops (FLOT), geographic border or battle container (CAP AOR, kill box, location of friendlies, etc).” TO BMS1F-16CJ-AMLU-34-1-1

Do you assign PPT circles to ground units carrying HN-5A, SA7, or SA13? How does that work since these threats are mobile and on the move? Do you use “Lines” and create a box around them instead??

How do you handle SAM units after the radar (e.g. Fan Song) is destroyed? Do we assign a AAA Preplanned threat to the SAM unit afterwards? They seem to have AAA guns that can still engage you.

Do you use PPT (Airbase) or “Lines” to designate alternate friendly airbases? I know we use the lines for Tanker tracks but can’t find anything else on this.

In summary, it would help to understand when to use PPT circles and when to use “Lines”.

      I appreciate your feedback!

      Thank you

Use whatever works for you. I tend to use the PPTs for relevant threats - manpads never get marked, if I go into their engagement altitude I assume Ive been fired on. Tactical and strategic SAMs get marked though, and the FLOT gets marked.
I use PPTs for marking enemy airbases, but for friendly airbases I use radio navigation instead.

Yes, what Bluewolf said, ‘use whatever works for you’ …. within the limits of what’s available. For instance the number of pre-planned threat steerpoints is limited, as are the number of line segments.

After they are dead, I make the HSD my sensor of interest, slew the cursor over that ppt and then TMS Down to remove the threat circle …. dead SAMs launch no missiles.

Dont bother with Manpads, just assign yourself a hard deck. Same goes with SHORADs (SA-8,9,13) except for the SA-15 which I usually mark, these are pretty nasty. Other SAMs, I usually mark those which can be relevant for my flightplan.

As Agave_blue stated, you can use the HSD for removing the SAM circle : SOI on the HSD, slew the cursor over the threat point, TMS Down to remove the circle.

For the lines : use them as you see fit, really. Uses includes :

            • marking the FLOT - or the coast.
            • marking roads where you are likely to find enemy bataillons in interdiction
            • marking tanker station - use the ATO, “Show all packages”, then find the tanker flights and display them to know where to put the lines.
            • marking any kind of operation area - again in Interdiction or CAS.
Just ask yourself what kind of stuff you would want to be displayed on the HSD, that’s all 😉

Can this SAM Battalion still kill you with AAA after the radar is destroyed?

              Thank you

Yes. The Fansong only guides the SA2

If you stay low and fast or high and fast, it is unlikely …. possible, but not an ‘easy kill’ for them.

Thanks Ironman … I’ve been flying thru SA2/AAA locations (with no Fansong) thinking they are just blindly shooting at me :uham: You watch … the very next time I go up, I’ll get tagged by AAA !!

AAA is optical and will fire without radar guidance, but it’s much more dangerous with the fire can radars. AAA is uniquely annoying, but as long as the area is clear of SA2~ i just fly at 32000 feet to avoid them entirely. sure the chance of getting tagged is very low but a 0% chance is preferable.
