How do people normally play VR?
-
Hi all, new to BMS. Just wondering how people normally have controls setup for VR. As I was thinking about using a full cockpit (thinking, not considering) and got to wondering how that works with VR. Do most people just use hotas and the mouse?

I’ve been flying VR exclusively using my Quest 3 for many months now. I don’t even need a mouse. Just my HOTAS.

Hotas, mfd frames, Logitech track ball mouse thing. Hand tracking pass through via virtual desktop. Sorted.

@SoBad how exactly are you able to avoid using a mouse?
-
@Bluestar in the launcher you can bind hotas buttons to left and right click. You can also set a variable in your config file for the cursor following your head movement. So look at switch, press hotas left click button.
-
Yeah, mostly HOTAS and mouse here.
May be due to my Gemini nature, I have one set of HOTAS for the F-16 and another for F-15. Thank goodness there is only one set of rudder pedals where there is not enough space for another one… Also, 2 trackballs, on each side, one for “left hand” and the other for the “right hand”.
I use ELECOM trackballs.
Yup, I have a bass shaker behind me in the cushions.

Interesting Post.
Which could be the best configuration for VR or Mixed Reality to fly with BMS 4.38? :=)
-
HOTAS, MFD frames, physical ICP, TekCreations landing gear panel, button boxes, older devices reused as button boxes, mouse for right hand, trackball for left hand.
But I so wish PointCtrl or Slugmouse would work in BMS!!! PointCtrl works so well for DCS that I would really only need a button box for only the few switches I like to be able to use without looking at them when under stress (Master Arm is one of those). Anything you can look and see in the VR cockpit can be naturally clicked on and it feels pretty close to using physical switches in case you like that tactile feel. Plus it is instantly usable across different aircraft types, you have no problem of your physical switch being in a different spot from the aircraft you are flying, you just look in VR close to it, move your hand the rest of the way and click it.
I really like the hand passthrough @MCDeedle and @oakdesign are using with the Quest 3. It would allow me to more easily find all my miscellaneous switches and would then play with BMS mixed reality pass through for the part of my home cockpit that is almost 1:1.
The answer is pretty much never VR controllers, they are too clunky to use with a HOTAS and don’t have enough tracking accuracy and buttons to be used as a HOTAS replacement.

Voice commands are perfectly suited for VR, too. I wouldn’t use VR without voice controls, including speech-to-text typing. Obviously, I’m completely biased as I work with and make voice control systems for Windows and PC games
-
@kv I,'m usuing Quest 3, Openkneeboard, simshakerks ,foxvox, rs mfds and icp, Arduino ded, and my semi pit.
I only use mouse to use the paneles I don’t go to implement
My Next step is mixed reality, WIP at this moment.
For mi…I never thought in 1998 I use Falcon 40 in this way
Thanks to all the people Who have made this dream a reality

I try to get into VoiceCOM but I think the PC need more training in light of my assent…
I have a tiny 24-key programming keyboard mounted on the sofa handle for various radio comm control and video recording.

Honestly, what I wouldn’t give to have PointCTRL working within BMS. It’s the best way of interfacing with a virtual 3D cockpit in VR that I’ve ever used imho.

Yes and your profile is highly recommended! I’ve used before VR in BMS but really it’s indispensable in VR for me!

I knew you’d be here saying it too buddy!

As I have been mentioned.
as there is no real working solution for hand tracked cokpit interaction and as well in those games where it is integrated I find it not really reliable especially with a packed tight space of a aircraft cockpit, I personally with my own requirement to be able to operate BMS without any mouse or keyboard usage I went with a Mixed reality setup.
this is my physical setup
which then in the technical setup with a Quest 3 and Virtual desktop in combination of hand tracked passthrough look like this in the headset
-
@kv I use hotas for hotas stuff, mouse and keyboard and buttonboxes for the rest. It’s a pain in the ass finding the exact button sometimes (VR) so that makes me fly the sim mainly with trackIR.
-
@b0bl00i Imagine if you had a mouse cursor tied to the end of your finger. And you could just reach out and click on stuff around the cockpit…
-
Using mouse.
-
@vrfgipjp I see many people saying trackballs, why use a trackball instead of a regular mouse?
-
I use an Elecom Left handed trackball. Hand doesn’t have to leave the stick. Right handed Logitech for everything else.
