Kirov class

30NM is in range for the Harpoon.
I would say more than double of that, so no need to even get close to the radar horizon.

Nice pic there Radium. Obviously about 28 years newer than my ones.

Hello everybody,
Since i am a Beta Tester for Radium and his various 3D models, i did some test to see how close i can come to the Kirov and stay alive !
The first test i did was with a Block 52 from the ROKAF, since they are wired to carry the AGM-84 HARPOON anti-ship missile. The weather settings were set to inclement, the reason for that was that i wanted to test at what range you can detect the Kirov on the AGM radar in the SEA submode.
We took-off, headed for the sea, switched to A-G, master-arm ON and down to 100 feet AGL, altimeter was set to radar altimeter and off we went. At 100 feet AGL i started scanning quickly between my radar screen and HUD. At approximtely 60 NM from the steerpoint where the Kirov was supposed to be, i dropped down to 50 feet AGL . The minimum engagement altitude of the SA-N-6 is 75 feet AGL.
My HSD threat ring for the SA-N-6 turns red, and now my attention is divided between flying at 50 feet AGL and listening to the RWR for any sign of the SA-N-6.
I am closing in and at about 20 NM i have a return on my radar scope, i try to quickly puy curors on it …and it vanished. Shortly after that i have a ship symbol on my RWR popping up, i turn in to put the symbol on my 12 o’clock. Nothing on the radar, nothing visually, but a signature on my RWR.
I must be very close because suddenly i see a structure on the horizon, there the KIROV!! … i press the cursor reset switch to change mode, i put the little designation box on top of the fast growing structure, TMS up, a quick look down on my MFD to now lock the kirov on my WPN page and … missile launch warning … just before sharply turning to break away i hit the pickle button, Harpoon away … and kaboom …i am dead.
But the Kirov took a hit and won’t be fighting no more, as i swim in the sea …i see how smoke comes out of the ship and alarms are ringing.
I did another flight with a Royal Norwegian Air Force F-16 MLU, this time armed with AGM-119 or Pinguin how it is called in Norway. The weather settings were nice weather.
Nothing on the radar this time, went down to 30 feet to avoid the SA-N-4 …. and scored 1 hit with the Pinguin.
Of course in both cases wingman got shot down since he refuses to follow you below 100 feet.
Based on my very limited experience with TASMO …. the F-16 in BMS is not the optimal platform for this, the SEA submode is not really helping at very low altitude.
Weather is a big factor, avoid doing TASMO in bad weather, bring a TGP along with you to mark the target (easier to pass on targets in MP).
I think the F-16 is a possible option for TASMO, but not the optimal one …unless you have the right support, for exemaple other aircraft equipped to detect and give vectors etc.

I think the F-16 is a possible option for TASMO, but not the optimal one …
….depends on the weapon The RL Penguin would have been ok.
-
Yes i very well know, but i can only work with BMS limitations

@spooky - Thanks for the write-up.

Thank you dear Spooky for your testing time.
I really appreciate your “flight tale”, it really gives to the beta testing some depth, and, it is pretty interesting for our enthusiasts followers here.
Moreover, I really like screen #3!
Thank you so much,
Kindly yours,
Radium

Hey Spooky the one thing that cannot be taken into account for your attacks is the CIWS which these ships (well just about all to now) have. 2 on each side can provide direct targeting of any inbound missile. Dodging SAN6s is one thing for you but not the same for Harpoons etc. Has any provision been made for CIWS in regard to percentage getting through?
