ODS kills, BVR or WVR?

Wondering how ODS air engagements worked for the coallition forces. They relied on AWACS info or had to visually ID the bandits before using the missiles?

According to the Dogfights History Channel documentary some cases they relied purely on AWACS and other assets but in others they have to VID.
For example there was a situation where a wingman from an enemy element lit up as a friendly after the leader was splashed so they had to get VID before pressing the attack.
At the end of the documentary there was an engagement where 4-ship F-15Cs shot down 3 Floggers at BVR. One would assume no VID was done here.

According to accounts from the F-15C pilots there was an ID matrix for BVR which included IFF, NCTR and AWACs confirmation, but didn’t require all of those.
e.g. in one AIM-7 kill (fired at about 12 miles ) it is stated just IFF and AWACs confirmation was enough to satisfy the ROE.
