I am having trouble simply getting Falcon BMS running. I managed to get it running when I took my computer into a shop to get rid of a virus and asked them to install the software. The software never ran right. So I uninstalled (using the control panel which I read was a bad idea) and tried to reinstall the software they had loaded and I got setup.cfg missing. Then I tried the torrents on this site and my computer told me it could not open the torrents and suggested a bunch of spurious software packages to fix the problem. Do I simply have the wrong computer? Dell XPS Windows 7. I noticed that other sites out there offer downloads but when you try them they get to a page that says file not found or some such negative remark. I thought perhaps I am getting to old for this sort of thing but when I researched the problem the advice that I kept running into was “don’t use Falcon 4.0 Allied Force”. That does not seem too hard to understand. Please offer some advice because I would like very much to fly Falcon 4.0 BMS.

You need the original from 1998 falcon 4.0 cd or the exe file of it. Exe stands for executable.

Go to my hotlist and find the thread with the Falcon base + u1-u7. It has falcon bms base setup and all the updates. Download it. Unzip it then run setup from there. When it asks you point to the Falcon cd or where the Falcon exe is.

Now if your hardware is OK for falcon you will enjoy.

Thank you Arty for the quick response. However, there is enough unexpected happening that is throwing me off track. I managed to find your “thread” on your hotlist. But when I click on it - it takes me to another page which looks like and earlier post which refers to a download link which when I click on it I go to another page where there is something called media fire and “capcha” and security codes, etc. It refers to what I want to download at the top of the page but I am not sure what or which download I am suppose to click on. Still needing help. Thanks in advance.

you are at the correct place. It’s on Mediafire. click on the download and it will ask you for the captcha and it will start the download. depending on your browser setting it might ask you where to save the file.

Once again Thank you for the quick response. I managed to download it this time becoming aware of captchas and Mediafire. Would you believe I was quite the computer wizard in my day when one had to decipher DOS manuals. However, I am getting the the error message when I try to run the exe: Setup.cfg is missing. Any thoughts about this one? When I researched it I got a bunch of recommendations including reload Windows. Of course the recommendation the internet pushes is buy our spurious software to clean up the registry. I would think it is time to go back to the software shop but I am not having any problems any where else, including downloading other software packages. Have any other Falcon pilots run into this problem or is it time to take my computer back to the software fix it shop?

It concerns me that u had some near misses with virus/malware/hijacking/redirecting in your recent encounter with torrents. I,m sure you are aware that offers to fix non existent problems are attempts to infect your PC.
Stick with it and you will get there.

if you have an antivirus running stop it.

Same goes for firewall cause it checks online.

Second it might be registry leftovers from previous install attempts.

                  Solution for registry: https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?10640-Reinstalling-Issue-quot-The-registry-entry-quot

You do the registry clean from the previous link then you run the setup and hope it works ok.

Also consider this as an optional solution to your problem: https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?5404-Read-this-if-your-installer-does-not-let-you-continue-the-installation

Once again I must thank you for the quick responses. I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is I got it installed. The bad news is the procedure was not anything close to what you recommended above. I did follow all the recommendations above but when that did not work…well… rather than take up your time with a long explanation I will say you all got me started again when I was stuck. It felt more like blind luck on my part but it is running again. The problem now is I seem to be having the same problems I was before I reinstalled. For instance, my mouse cursor seems to float when trying to click on something but this is only in the cockpit. What I am really wondering is where do I go for technical support? Is this the spot? Are we newbies allowed an unlimited number of questions? Probably not. Is there a way we can pay for technical support when we need it? I understand I need to do a fair amount of research on my own and have already watched some well done training on YouTube.

Yeap you r allowed as many as u like.
Ppl will come here and say rtfm, which is right.
In my hotlist you will find training videos. They will get you started.
Consider joining a virtual squadron. Many take newbies like u and turn them to real vpilots. U will find an updated thread with the Falcon vsquadrons in my hotlist.

Now when u say your mouse is floating over the pit? This is normal. When u hover over a button or switch u must see the pointer change. When u click or rotate the mousewheel things should change and those gizmos in there should respond to your input.

Could this be a reference to the default config. setting that anchors the mouse on cockpit button hotspots? I recently did a fresh BMS install and was wondering what was wrong with my mouse seeming to lag in the cockpit until I remembered this setting. The setting in found in the ‘falcon bms.cfg’ file located in the BMS Config folder. The default install was set to ‘1’, but I changed mine to ‘0’ for smoother mouse in the cockpit.

set g_b3DClickableCursorAnchored 0 // If enabled, the cursor is anchored on hotspot while moving view

Me again. After experimenting with Falcon BMS (and enjoying that) I have experienced several bugs like the pickle button not working and decided to uninstall BMS, Falcon Allied Force and Falcon 4. I uninstalled BMS first and found the correct setup uninstall was inside the control panel programs. Everything went fine until I tried to install BMS. Last time the installer was miraculously inside the control panel programs but it is not there this time. When I tried to run setup from the downloaded BMS file I got the error “Setup.cfg is missing”. I mentioned this above. I read up on the Setup.cfg and could not figure out what to do. Although I did not see any information on Setup.cfg on this website. May look again. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance. I might mention how easy the transition from Allied Force is so far is if you have the right keyboard file loaded. Great work!

I am not remembering what I am doing. Just found a bunch of references to Setup.cfg is missing here on your site. Also refers to virus problems which I do remember turning of all my virus software and still having the Setup.cfg is missing problem. I will keep reading these posts but if you think of anything new please let me know.

Should have mentioned I did run the registry cleanup program. But I did not move the files to temp. Will try that now and let you know.

I moved the folder containing Falcon 4 BMS Setup… U1… etc to Windows/Temp and got the same error. Setup.cfg is missing.

Read the post more carefully and it says to extract the files to temp. Sorry about this. As you can see you are dealing with a real novice.

Keep working at it like you have been and you will get it. This is not a sim to jump in and go, and can take some digging in the forums, reading manuals, and youtubes. As for the pickle bug you mentioned, if you are sure it’s not a key command issue then it could be a know bug. See this thread.

Yes. I am getting the hang of this software. I actually just found that thread using the search so I will go try it now. I believe it will work since the original poster described my problem exactly. This website is proving to be invaluable but as you say does require a certain amount of stick-to-it-ness.
