Where to/How to get Original Falcon 4.0?
-
Hi, so I remember playing Falcon several years ago, and I enjoyed it a lot. Recently I am getting back into flight sims and would like to play it again, now with the BMS addon.
My question is, what is the best way to get the original Falcon 4.0 so I can then add BMS? Is it free? Should I buy it? I don’t want to spend 50 dollars for a copy like here http://www.amazon.com/Falcon-4-0-PC/dp/B00000K4KF (For that I would rather buy a new plane on the Digital Combat Simulator platform) but I am also hearing conflicting reports about whether sources like GOG, who is asking a reasonable price, actually has rights to be selling it.
What should I do?

Ok if y’all sort of endorse GOG then I’ll go there. Thanks!

It’s not about endorsing GOG. It’s the only place to get a new copy. For a long time (many years), there were no distributors at all for Falcon4. GOG picked up the ball very recently and it’s the only place you can get it unless you want to buy second hand.
It looks like GoG is distributing or licensing Falcon from Retroism. Retroism licenses a variety of old Atari games through GoG, Amazon, etc.
Retroism is owned by Tommo. I’ve heard, but don’t know for sure, that Tommo bought the rights from Atari for a variety of Atari/Spectrum Holobyte/Microprose titles, including Falcon (I assume when Atari went bankrupt).
If all of that is correct, then it looks to me like GoG (and by extension, buyers at GoG) is on solid ground.
@tommo.com:
In January 2015, Tommo launched Retroism.com as a central hub for its Non Humongous retro gaming classic titles. Retroism.com is a haven for publishers with classic gaming content looking for a showcase and distribution channel devoted to giving new life to best PC/MAC games of the last 25 years. Retroism’s publishing arm creates extensive placement for Tommo ……

Well I just downloaded the Falcon 4.0 from GOG, it is a much older looking thing than what I played a few years ago. What I played is probably the version in my link to the Amazon site in my OP.
Anyhow I cannot get the BMS installer to see my GOG version of Falcon 4.0 when it asks for the folder. The installer’s “next” button wont highlight no matter what folder I click. The Falcon 4.0 is in c:\GOG Games\Falcon. The installer opens it one step more to \Documentation and \Video Codec but no more. And whatever i try to point it to the Next does not light up. I have two other versions I haven’t downloaded yet from GOG that came in the package I will try those, but I thought I downloaded the original one.
Also apologies about my saying “endorsed”. What I meant was that it is the one referred to in the FAQ as one of the ways to get the original 4.0 (not bugged, and it works etc), not that BMS somehow officially endorses GOG.

locate the falcon4.exe and copy it to somewhere eg C:/ then point bms to it. Other people have said this new falcon original works

Gog.com. They just acquired the distribution rights to it. I believe it’s $6.99 this week.

GoG released several versions of Falcon …. Falcon 3.0, Falcon 4.0, etc.
The exe you need should be named “Falcon4.exe”. I think it’s version 1.08.
You need to point the installer to the folder where that exe is … in other words, “The exe is inside of this ______ folder.”
Uhmmmm, by the way … the new BMS version, 4.33, just released a little over an hour ago … https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?23313-Falcon-BMS-4-33

GOG is owned by the same parent company that makes The Witcher. No way a company that also manages a triple-A publisher would sell a game without rights, lol.

As an employee of GOG, I can assure you that we have the right to distribute the Falcon collection on our site
It wouldn’t be there otherwise

You may have downloaded Falcon 3.0 Gold. If you go to your game shelf and click on Falcon Gold’s box, you will see Falcon 4.0 under the section “Game goodies” with a file size of 367 MB. We offer the original Falcon 4.0 as an “as-is” bonus item because the game’s remaining bugs are a bit too time consuming to fix but we wanted everyone to have access to an original Falcon 4.0 executable so that you can run BMS
